Chicago Alderman Brian Hopkins stated on Thursday’s CNN News Central that the city can’t take any more migrants. “We are seeing crime rise, property values fall” and we’re “seeing communities destabilized.” Hopkins added, “I am a Democrat but I will say that the Biden Administration has dropped the ball.” and that “everyday that passes while we allow the border to remain open and we let cities attempt to address this humanitarian crises, it gets worst by the minute.”

Hopkins said, “We’re seeing communities destabilized. We are seeing an influx in new residents that don’t even have a home. Local shelters are having a negative impact on local residents’ quality of life. We’re seeing crime go up, property values go down. This is creating a crisis in politics and tensions between communities. Chicago desperately needs a decompression. We have 30,000 migrants. We can’t take on any more. “We’re simply not equipped to handle it.”

He said that part of a decompression plan would be to help migrants get permanent housing and work permits.

Hopkins concluded: “I am a Democrat but I will say that the Biden Administration has dropped the ball. I won’t let them off. It’s unacceptable that they have left us with this problem. The news I hear now is encouraging. We needed to know this when the crisis in Chicago first began. A trickle turned into a torrent. Now we are spending $300 million of our own money, which is about 5% our federal municipal budget, to solve a problem that did not exist even a year and a half before. Where has the federal government gone? What has been the Biden administration doing? The time to act is not too late, but the more we wait, the worse it becomes. “I’m losing patience as you can tell.”

Hopkins’s comments come after New York City mayor Eric Adams (D), Chicago mayor Brandon Johnson (D), and Denver Mayor Mike Johnston(D) held an online press conference where they called on the Biden Administration to increase federal funding to deal with the migrant inflow.

Johnson said that the influx of people into Chicago “is not sustainable” without “significant Federal support.”
