The Republican governor has appointed the daughter of late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia. Glenn Youngkin was appointed to the Virginia Board of Education by Republican Gov.

Meg Bryce is a psychology teacher who ran unsuccessfully last year for a seat at-large on the Albemarle County School Board. She said at the business meeting held Thursday that she was grateful that Youngkin selected her to be a member of the board. The board determines statewide standards for curriculum, graduation requirements for high school, and the qualifications for teachers.

Bryce stated, “I am so impressed with what this board has done already to increase accountability, transparency and excellence in Virginia Schools.” “Those are issues that I’ve already fought for, and it is my honor and privilege to continue those efforts.”

Bryce was born and raised in Virginia. She earned her doctorate in cognitive sciences from the University of Virginia. Bryce was criticized by community members during her campaign for Albemarle School Board for removing her children from public schools due to the pandemic. This is according to The Daily Progress. Bryce was described as a capstone tutor at the University of Virginia by a board. Community leaders have since criticized her for being unfit to hold the position.

James J. Fedderman is the president of Virginia Education Association. He said that Bryce’s appointment was “another example of a long line of shortsighted and politically motivated decisions which serve to advance Gov. Youngkin’s antipublic education agenda is a threat to LGBTQIA+ children in the Commonwealth.

Grace Creasey is the Board President, who was also appointed by Youngkin to lead the group in 2022. She said that she is delighted to have Bryce as a member of this group.

Creasey, who was referring to mental health issues and other problems students face, said that having an expert in the field of psychology and teaching experience on the board is a great asset for navigating today’s most important issues. She will be an incredible addition to the Board and a champion of students.

Christian Martinez, a Youngkin spokesman, said that the governor was grateful that Bryce will serve Virginians as a member of the board. He added that she would “be instrumental in ensuring that each parent, student and teacher receives essential resources and the support they need to thrive.”

Youngkin has also appointed Ida Outlaw McPherson to the board. She is an attorney from the Hampton Roads area. Two seats became available this month.

McPherson is a Howard University graduate and was appointed to the position by Governor. Bob McDonnell will serve as director of the Department of Minority Business Enterprise (now titled Department of Small Business and Supplier Diversity). Creasey stated that she was also the former president for the NAACP Suffolk Chapter.

Creasey stated that McPherson’s work in the community would allow her to bring a critical perspective to the board.

Fedderman stated that almost all Youngkin’s nominees, including McPherson were unqualified to serve on the Board. They “lack many of credentials expected of a member of this Board.”
