Netanyahu dismisses Defense Minister Gallant

The Israeli leadership has been shaken up by the growing tensions surrounding Gaza’s war strategy. “I tried to reconcile our differences many times, but they only got wider,” Netanyahu stated.

According to Israeli media, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu fired Defense Minister Yoav Galant, marking an important shift in Israel’s leadership during wartime.

In a videotaped speech, Netanyahu stated that his highest commitment is to secure Israel’s safety and to lead us to victory.

“During wartime the trust between a Prime Minister and a Defense Minister must be absolute. In the beginning of this campaign we worked together and had a good relationship. However, in recent months that relationship has significantly deteriorated.

Netanyahu said that he had serious disagreements with Gallant over the management and war effort. Gallant took positions that contradicted government and cabinet decisions.

“I tried to resolve our differences many times, but they only got worse. The disagreements were made public, in a way they shouldn’t be, and worse, our enemies took advantage.

Gallant responded to his dismissal by tweeting: “Israeli security is and will always be my life’s work.”

This isn’t their first confrontation. The relationship between the two leaders has been strained over time. It reached a climax during March 2023’s “Gallant night” protests, when thousands of people demonstrated against Netanyahu’s attempt to dismiss Gallant.

Netanyahu announced that Israel Katz would take over as Defense Minister. He cited Katz’s five-year tenure in the Security Cabinet, his experience as Minister of Foreign Affairs, Finance, and Intelligence, as well his previous membership as Minister of Foreign Affairs.
