Democratic Representative AOC removes pronouns from bio — Here’s why it’s sparking controversy online

The Democratic Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio Cortez (also known as AOC), also trended on social media when users of X, formerly Twitter, noticed that she did not include “she/her’ pronouns within her biography. This change was reportedly made in the early part of this year. Conservative voices have mocked and commented on it, including American political activist Riley Gaines.

Riley Gaines criticizes AOC’s pronouns

Gaines responded to the criticism of transgender athletes in women’s sport with a series on X. Citing Ocasio Cortez’s advocacy of pronouns in the past, Gaines said, “They will pretend that they never embraced or even celebrated” the insanity, referring to claims that pronouns had been removed.

Gaines sarcastically questioned, “How will AOC be called now that the pronouns are missing from her bio ?!?!??” !”

D.C. isn’t singing Kumbaya just yet

Quite frankly, we may have won the election, but there’s still a war to be fought and the Left isn’t resting; they’re regrouping. And now that Donald Trump is Time’s Person of the Year, you can be assured their feelings have been exacerbated. They’re not singing Kumbaya in DC just yet. In fact, they’re plotting ways to embarrass him and cause him to fail. Will you join our efforts to fight back and defeat them?. We can’t wait until January 21—that will be too late!

Advocate for trans rights

Ocasio Cortez is a long-time advocate of transgender inclusion and rights. She has frequently supported trans athletes competing in women’s sport. She co-sponsored Equality Act, and in March 2023 she joined Democrats to propose a “Transgender Bill of Rights”.

Biden administration criticizes Title IX reform

She also criticized the Biden administration’s reform of Title IX in April. Ocasio-Cortez criticized the reform of Title IX, which was intended to protect gender identity.

There is no excuse for the Biden administration to act in this way. She wrote that the decision was “indefensible” and “embarrassing”, urging the administration not to make it.

Social Media Reactions to AOC’s removal of pronouns in Bio

Users on X, formerly Twitter, noticed that Democratic Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio Cortez removed the “she/her’ pronouns in her bio. Social media exploded with reactions. After Donald Trump won the 2024 presidential election, there was a wave mockery and speculation about why this change occurred.

Conservative commentators saw Ocasio-Cortez’s decision as a symbol of a wider shift in political sentiment after Trump’s win. One user remarked, “Looks as though even the pronouns have voted red.” Nature has a mysterious way of working! Another user added: “Trump was elected and poof – where’d the pronouns disappear?”

Some used this moment to encourage Ocasio Cortez to reconsider the political position she has taken. One commenter wrote, “I notice you have removed your personal pronouns. This is a great first step. Let us know if you ever want to switch to the conservative side. “We are the winning team. Jump on while you still can.”

Criticism of authenticity

Some users criticised Ocasio Cortez for her inconsistency and opportunism. “Where did your pronouns disappear?” One post stated that “A lot of Democrats have changed their tunes since the Trump Mandate.” One commenter jokingly said, “Maybe the pronouns are being replaced with adjectives?”

Clarifications are needed

Several users sought an explanation from Ocasio-Cortez. In one tweet, the user wrote: “@AOC you asked voters on social media why they voted as they did. You removed your pronouns. Another person added: “Thanks for the message, AOC. Please clarify your pronouns. “It’s important that I understand how to address future communication.”
