Trump fills out health care, national security and economic teams with flurry of moves
Donald Trump, the president-elect, has already filled his teams in economics, health care, and national security with a number of nominations and appointments. These include Scott Bessent, formerly White House Budget Director, as Treasury Secretary, and Russell Vought, former hedge fund manager, for this role.
In an hour on Friday night, Mr. Trump named his surgeon-general, labor secretary, and other top advisers. He announced Brooke Rollins as Agriculture Secretary on Saturday. She was his former White House Domestic Policy Advisor.
The President-elect completed the core roles of the Cabinet by nominating Rep. Lori Chavez DeRemer of Oregon to be Labor Secretary, Janette Nesseiwat to be Surgeon General, and Scott Turner, a former Trump Administration official, as the head of the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
Mr. Bessent founded Key Square Group in 1992, which managed capital of more than 4.5 billion dollars. He was George Soros’ chief investment officer, funding liberal causes. Mr. Bessent founded Key Square after receiving a $2 billion investment by Mr. Soros.

Mr. Bessent was quoted by Mr. Trump as saying: “On the eve our great country’s anniversary, he’ll help me usher a new Golden Age in the United States, as we strengthen our position as the leading economy of the world, the center of innovation, entrepreneurialism and destination for capital while always maintaining U.S. Dollars as the reserve currency of the world.”
Ron Wyden of the Oregon Democratic Senate Finance Committee said that Mr. Bessent’s selection suggests an administration intent to serve “the ultra-wealthy.”
“Donald Trump pretends that he is an economic populist. But it wouldn’t have been a Trump Treasury Department if a wealthy political donor was running the show,” said Mr. Wyden in a press release.
Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina) called Mr. Bessent a “gifted academic and tested in the real world”.
“I am looking forward to working with Scott and President Trump in order to lower inflation and bring prosperity to the American people. “Well done, Mr. Trump and congratulations Scott”, Mr. Graham said.
Mr. Bessent is the first openly LGBTQ official to hold a high-ranking government position in history. He is married to former New York City Prosecutor John Freeman and is openly gay.
The Log Cabin Republicans are a group of conservative LBGTQ members who called Mr. Bessent a ‘terrific selection.
Mr. Bessent is going to help Mr. Trump implement the tax cuts he promised during the campaign and impose tariffs of up to 20% on foreign countries.

The Teamsters Union backed Ms. Chavez DeRemer. After an internal survey showed that many of their members preferred Mr. Trump, the union decided not to endorse a candidate for the presidential election in 2024. She lost her reelection campaign this month.
After Reps. Elise Stefanik from New York and Mike Waltz from Florida, she is the third Republican in the House that Mr. Trump chose for his administration. Matt Gaetz, a former Florida congressman who was nominated by Mr. Trump to be Attorney General, resigned and withdrew the nomination after a scandal involving sexual misconduct.
Mr. Trump stated that Ms. Chavez DeRemer “would support the hardworking men, and women, of America.”
The National Right to Work Committee (which advocates against union organization) blasted Chavez-DeRemer, calling her a tool for Big Labor. She supported the PRO Act that organized labor has been lobbying Congress for years to pass. The act would allow workers to more easily form unions.
Mr. Vought was to oversee the White House Budget and ensure that federal agencies adhered to the President’s policies.
In his previous role as Trump’s chief budget officer, he suggested that emergency powers could be used to bypass congressional decisions on how much money to spend for a border wall.
Mr. Vought played a key role in the development of Project 2025 by The Heritage Foundation, which is a blueprint for conservative governance. Democrats tried to link Mr. Trump with Project 2025, but he dissociated himself from it repeatedly during the campaign.
Mr. Trump called Mr. Vought “aggressive” cost-cutter, and a deregulator.
Ms. Rollins was a key player in the first White House tenure of Mr. Trump. She was a member of Mr. Trump’s Economic Advisory Council and the Director of his Domestic Policy Council. She also served as the Director of the Office of American Innovation as well as an assistant to the President for strategic initiatives.
She was appointed CEO and cofounder of America First Policy Institute, and America First Works. The two nonprofits were created to push Mr. Trump’s agenda for public policy over the last four years.
The America First Policy Institute played a major role in the transition of Mr. Trump. Linda McMahon was a board member of the nonprofit research center.
Ms. Rollins grew up in Glen Rose, Texas – a town centered on agriculture – and graduated from Texas A&M University with a bachelor’s degree in agriculture. Ms. Rollins’ background, Mr. Trump claimed, gives her “practitioner experience” and her credentials in policy at both the state-level and the national level to lead the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Turner was a former NFL star who was chosen to head HUD. He was the first executive of the White House Opportunity and Revitalization Council in Mr. Trump’s Oval Office during his first term.
Along with Dr. Nesheiwat’s nomination, Mr. Trump also nominated Dr. Marty Makary as the commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration and former Florida congressman Dr. Dave Weldon to head the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Dr. Nesheiwat is a double-board-certified medical doctor and advocate for preventive medicine and public health. She is the newest Fox News contributor that Mr. Trump has hired.
Dr. Makary is a surgeon, writer and advocate for natural immunity. He was one of the most prominent medical voices against the COVID-19 mandates. Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a long-time vaccine skeptic, was appointed by Mr. Trump to head the Department of Health and Human Services.
Dr. Weldon was a medical practitioner and Army veteran who served seven terms as a lawmaker. He served in several committees while a member of Congress, including Appropriations, Health and Human Services, Education and the Workforce, and Science, Space and Technology. He returned to medicine after leaving Congress in 2009.
On the national-security front, Mr. Trump has announced that he will bring Sebastian Gorka to the White House as the deputy assistant to President and senior director for antiterrorism.
Alex Wong will be the assistant and principal deputy national security advisor, according to the president-elect. Both Mr. Gorka & Mr. Wong are expected to start their new jobs immediately. The Senate does not need to confirm them.
Mr. Gorka is a British-Hu
