Hunter Biden, the son of Joe Biden’s criminally charged father, was pardoned in full by President Biden during his last days as president.

Joe Biden told a June jury that he would not pardon the man who was found guilty of three federal gun charges.

The president’s decision is a complete reversal of his previous statements that he would never use his executive power to pardon or commute the sentence of his son. Hunter Biden is scheduled to be sentenced on Dec. 12, following his conviction for federal gun charges. Hunter Biden is also scheduled to be sentenced on Dec. 16 in a separate criminal matter after pleading guilt in September over federal tax evasion allegations.

Two people who have direct knowledge of these discussions said that President Biden and his closest aides have discussed pardoning his son since Hunter Biden was convicted in June. The two people said that at the time, the president decided to publicly deny pardoning his son even though the option was still open.

Hunter Biden released a statement on Sunday in which he said that his “mistakes” were made “during the darkness of my addiction”, and were “exploited for public humiliation and shaming me and my family as political sport”.
