House Democrats locked in generational battles for top committee posts to counter Trump
House Democrats are mulling over generational changes to key committee positions after a brutal election cycle of 2024 in which Republicans took control of both the White House as well as all of Congress.
In a caucus where committee leadership positions are traditionally given based on seniority in the House Democrats, a few more junior members of the party want to change this status quo.
On Monday, Maryland Democrat Rep. Jamie Raskin announced that he was running for the position of ranking member on the Judiciary Committee. Jerrold N. Nadler, New York Rep., has been the top Democratic position on Judiciary Committee since 2017. He is now running for a second term.
Democrats have no term limits on committee leaders. Republicans limit their members to a maximum of three terms of two years.

In the past, Democratic Caucus attempts to limit term limits failed repeatedly and there were few challenges against committee leaders. This year, however, has seen a change as Democrats wallowing in their electoral losses seek to find strong leaders who can take on Republicans and Trump’s administration.
In a letter to a colleague, Mr. Raskin (who will be 62 years old next week) announced his plans. He said that he had “respect and endless admiration” for M. Nadler.
His speech focused on the Judiciary Committee’s role in countering the “cavalier” lawlessness of Donald Trump, the President-elect.
Raskin stated, “This is the place where we will fight for the rights and freedoms of people, integrity of the Department of Justice, and FBI, as well as the safety of our most prized birthrights, including the Constitution, Bill of Rights and democracy.
The Washington Times contacted Mr. Nadler’s Office for comment.
In announcing that he was running for reelection as ranking member, Nadler stated that he would be “a bulwark to the MAGA Majority’s dangerous agenda.”
“As a New Yorker I have stood against Donald Trump all my career. “Before he entered politics, I tried to stop him from using taxpayer dollars to line the pockets of his friends,” said Mr. Nadler. When he was elected President, I led efforts by the Judiciary Committee to hold him responsible for his abuses of authority, which culminated in two historic impeachments. I know his playbook. I’m ready to stop him from becoming a dictator on day one.
Democrats will elect their committee leaders later this month.
Former constitutional law professor Mr. Raskin served as the House impeachment leader for the second Senate trials of Mr. Trump. He was charged and ultimately acquitted by the Senate of inciting a riot at the Capitol in January 2021. Mr. Raskin was also a member of the select committee which investigated the planning for and the response to the riots on Jan. 6, 2021.
A long-time Democratic Committee leader announced Monday that he would step down, rather than challenge a younger colleague.
Raul Grijalva of Arizona, who held the position for over 20 years, made a statement saying, “After much consideration, I’ve decided that the time is right to hand the torch off as the top Democrat in the House Natural Resource Committee during the 119th Congress.” “I don’t take this decision lightly. Being elected as Ranking Member is the highest honor in my professional career.”
Grijalva, who was diagnosed earlier this year with cancer, made his decision based on his recovery. He has already declared that he won’t run for re-election in the 2026 elections.
“I will continue to improve my health, strengthen my mobility, as well as serve my district during what is likely to become a period of unprecedented challenges for our community,” said Mr. Grijalva.
Rep. Jared Huffman from California announced his intention to run against him for the position of ranking member.
In a press release, Mr. Huffman (60) said that he was looking forward to working with Mr. Grijalva, and he plans to ask for the Democratic Caucus’s approval to name him a ranking member emeritus.
“Rep. “Rep.
Two candidates are vying for the position of ranking member David Scott, a Democrat on the House Agriculture Committee. Since 2021, the 79-year old has been the top Democrat in the committee.
Jim Costa, 72-year-old California Democrat and Angie Craig 52 year old Minnesota Democrat are running against Scott. Both of them cited the results of the elections in their pitches last month to colleagues.
“With Donald Trump’s return to the White House, our caucus requires a leader that will fight to defend the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program(SNAP), defend historic investments made through the Inflation Reduction Act, and bring a powerful Democratic message to rural America,” said Mr. Costa.
Ms. Craig stated, “Right Now, I am worried that too many rural Americans do not trust that Democrats are looking out for their best interests.” It’s my goal to work with you and change their minds.
