Chicago residents rip mayor over spending on migrants: ‘Worst mayor in America’
Mayor Brandon Johnson has proposed a $60M increase in property taxes to help close a $1 billion budget gap.
Chicago residents are slamming Mayor Brandon Johnson for spending more than half a a billion dollars to shelter migrants. One told the Democrat directly in his face at a City Council Meeting that he is the “worst president of America.”
Johnson’s New Arrivals Mission, which has so far cost Chicago $574.5million since August 2022, is being criticized as the mayor tries to close a $1billion budget gap by the end the year. Residents spoke out against a $60 million increase in property taxes that was proposed as a way to close the budget gap.
“I have a brilliant idea of what we can achieve with this budget. Let’s first cut off the illegals from getting everything for free, including housing, schooling and food. Let’s begin with that. “That’ll save us money,” a woman told Johnson.

Let’s begin with you. Let’s begin with you. Your salary. You will go down in history as America’s worst mayor. Start by cutting yours. “You’re making too much money,” continued the woman.
One resident said that Johnson is a legal immigrant and she feels “very, very ashamed” of what her fellow Latin American citizens do in this city for the people who work, the people who pay taxes, the people who contribute to the city.
“I want to be clear that everyone is not the same. They came in with the door wide open and feel entitled to many of the things that no one else has. She said that there are Americans who suffer from poverty. “There are U.S. Citizens on public assistance, but these people are just here enjoying the benefits and becoming delinquents and they have no consequence.”
A resident once asked Johnson to give him his “undivided” attention.
This just shows you how little leadership you have in this city. “You can’t give me straight-on eye contact,” said he. “Now, I’m going let you know, Chicagoans, that we’re finished with you.
Johnson’s Office stated in April that New Arrivals Mission’s goal is to provide short-term emergency shelter in order to manage the humanitarian crisis while making long-term investment in the City’s ability to handle future challenges in relation to displacement and emerging migration trends.
Since August 2022, Texas governor Greg Abbott has bussed thousands of asylum seekers throughout the United States. Chicago is the third largest city in the United States for asylum seekers, after New York City, Denver and Los Angeles. Nearly 39,000 new arrivals have been recorded in Chicago.
The city said that in partnership with Illinois State and Cook County it has supported new arrivals to become self-sufficient by providing food, emergency shelters, medical care and education, vaccinations, case management, and resettlement support.
The New Arrivals Shelter System will be phased-out by the end of this calendar year.
Johnson stated in October that “this transition is in accordance with the sharp decline of migration to Chicago, and our current budget reality.” We are moving to a more equitable, cost-effective and strategic approach for all those who need help in the City of Chicago.
Fox News Digital’s request for a comment on Tuesday was not responded to immediately by Johnson’s office.
