Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas stated on Friday that the Department of Homeland Security is aware of no threat or “nefarious” drones in New Jersey.

Since mid-November, local law enforcement has been concerned that drones may be controlled by foreign agents. The federal authorities have stressed repeatedly that drones are not a threat to national security, public safety or foreign agents. DHS and FBI released a joint statement Thursday.

Mayorkas said to CNN’s Wolf Blitzer that there was no evidence of a threat or other nefarious activities. “Wolf, I repeat: If we find out of anything of concern, we are going to be transparent with our communication,” Mayorkas said on Friday.

He said that the department’s capability to neutralize drones was “very limited”.

Mayorkas stated that “we can’t simply shoot a drone from the sky.” “We have repeatedly asked Congress for more power to combat drone activity. We have also requested more authority for the state and local officials who are under our supervision because they correctly note that those authorities need expanding.”

Federal agents are trying to calm public fears by attempting to reassure residents that they will not shoot down drones. Either the federal government has lost its credibility or it is displaying gross incompetence. Tom Cotton, a Republican from Arkansas, said that the Biden administration does not take our national security very seriously. On Friday, the senators agreed. In an open letter, Democratic New York and New Jersey Senators Cory Booker and Chuck Schumer, Kirsten Gilibrand and Andy Kim expressed their concern about “how drones could harm public safety” especially after recent reports stating that a medevac helicopter had been prevented from transporting seriously injured patients for care due to the presence of drones.

In a joint statement, DHS said and FBI stated that at this time law enforcement had not uncovered any “malicious activities or intent.”

The statement stated that “while there is no malicious activity known to occur in New Jersey, reports of sightings in the state do highlight the insufficiency” of the current authorities.
