Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares announced his legislative goals and priorities for the 2025 General Assembly. He emphasized protecting victims’ rights.

Miyares outlined over a dozen pieces legislation that he supports, which he said will prioritize victims’ right and public safety. He also highlighted legislation to further protect women’s sport.

The attorney general said, “This year’s session of the Virginia legislature presents an opportunity for us to address pressing issues that face Virginians…I remain committed to creating a stronger, safer Virginia by introducing bold and thoughtful legislation which prioritizes public security, defends victim’s rights and addresses the challenges facing our communities head on,”

Miyares supports a bill which would allow the Attorney General to prosecute child sexual abusers and those involved in human trafficking.

He also supports legislation that would strengthen efforts to protect human trafficking victims “by ensuring that organized crime connected to these cases can fully be prosecuted” which would hold the offenders accountable.

In an effort to clamp down on TikTok’s deceptive practices, the Attorney General is supporting legislation that establishes a private cause-of-action for parents to take against the social media firm’s “deceptive and misleading practices” and address concerns about data privacy, child abuse and security threats.

Miyares also promotes legislation that would permit Virginia terrorist victims to bring civil suits against those who “aid, abet and support terrorism.”

The Attorney General continues to fight for women’s sport by supporting legislation which would “strengthen, preserve and protect” the fairness, safety and opportunity of female athletes while “maintaining the integrity of sport within the established biological category.”

Miyares supports a measure that would allow university governing boards to examine partnerships with “countries causing concern” in order to protect academic institutions from “foreign influence”.
