DHS Chief Alejandro Mayorkas Seeks to Kill Laken Riley Act

According to reports, the Department of Homeland Security under Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, is trying to kill the Laken Riley Act. This bill requires that the DHS take illegal aliens into custody who have been arrested or convicted of crimes like theft, larceny and burglary.

In a post published on X, Pablo Manriquez wrote that “sources” at DHS told him that they estimated the cost of Laken Riley Act to be between 20-$30 billion.

Manriquez said that DHS sources quoted “a figure of $7 billion just for beds, BEFORE local law enforcement costs.”

Manriquez’s post was in response to a Stef Kight article, a political journalist with Axios. The article by Axios revealed that “federal officials” warned they might need to detain around 60,000 people, and that it would require “billions and thousands of additional detention beds.”

Breitbart’s John Binder reported that the House of Representatives had passed the Laken Riley Act at the start of January, despite the opposition of 159 Democrats.

Sen. John Fetterman, D-PA, is one of the Democrats that has supported the Laken Riley Act.

In a blog post, Fetterman said that “ICE reported tens and thousands of migrants who had criminal records – homicide or a sexual assault.”

Fetterman said that “425,000 migrants have criminal records and should be deported.”

“I support a border that is secure.” I support legal paths for Dreamers. “I support the Laken Riley Act,” Fetterman added.

The Laken Riley Act was named in honor of Laken Riley. She was a 22-year old nursing student murdered by Jose Antonio Ibarra on February 22, 2024 in Athens Georgia. Ibarra had been released from prison and illegally entered the United States.

Ibarra was found guilty of all charges in November 2024.

Breitbart’s Bradley Jaye reported previously that 33 Senate Democrats voted with Republicans to “clear an important procedural hurdle regarding the Laken Riley Act.”
