Belarus ruler claims landslide in ‘sham’ election
Alexander Lukashenko, the authoritarian leader of Belarus, has won another election that was branded a fraud by Western governments.
The Central Election Committee announced on Monday that Lukashenko had won 86.8% and that the turnout was nearly 87%.
Four other names were on the ballot, carefully selected to not challenge the current leadership. However, no credible candidates were allowed to participate in the elections as all opposition figures were either in prison or exiled abroad.
There were no independent observers present to monitor the voting.

Kaja Kallas of the EU’s Foreign Policy Chief said that the Belarusian election was a blatant affront against democracy. German Foreign Minister Annalena Bärbock wrote on X, “The people of Belarus were left with no choice”.
Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin’s spokesperson, said that President Vladimir Putin congratulated Lukashenko on his “solid win”.
Peskov stated that Moscow believes that the Belarusian elections were an “absolutely legitimate, well-organised, transparent election”, and attacked “the voices from the West”.
Lukashenko was also congratulated by the leaders of Venezuela, China and Pakistan.
Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, an exiled Belarusian leader of opposition, dismissed the election as a “political farce”.
She won the 2020 elections, where she ran in place of her husband who was in prison.
Lukashenko believed that Tikhanovskaya was not a threat to him, but when she seemed to be gaining massive support she was forced out of the country.
Belarus has now closed all of its independent media.
Lukashenko said to Steve Rosenberg of the BBC on Sunday night that his opponents “chosen prison or exile”.
He said that “we never forced anyone to leave the country” and added that he didn’t “care less whether [the West] recognizes our election”.
Lukashenko will serve his seventh term as president. Lukashenko has been in power since 1994.
