According to reports, 800,000 noncitizens may soon be voting in New York City’s elections. A court is reportedly considering legislation that will allow them to register as voters ahead of the city elections.

According to Politico, a top New York court will hear arguments on the issue on Tuesday. The decision comes after a court of appeals ruled against Democrats’ attempts to allow non-citizens the right to vote in last year’s election.

The report stated that if the Democrats’ initiative is successful, approximately 800,000 noncitizens who live in New York City would be able to vote at city level elections such as the November mayoral election.

The supporters of the bill that would allow non-citizens to vote argue that these residents have been unfairly taxed.

In five City Council Districts, non-U.S. Citizens make up around a third the adult population,” lawyers reportedly wrote in an application. These New Yorkers are paying billions of dollars in taxes, but have no voice in the local policies that impact their daily lives, such as public safety, garbage collection or housing.

New York City Republicans remain unimpressed, and remind those involved that “every citizen” has the right to vote, according to the constitution of New York.

Andrew Lanza, New York State Senator (R-24th Senate District), told Politico that it was “hard to discuss” because “it’s absurd it’s an issue.” He added, “Citizens should vote.” If you are not a citizen, then you shouldn’t have a voice.

A panel of judges found that “it is irrefutable” that the non-citizens should not be allowed to vote.

The bill comes amid a heated race between Democrats seeking to replace New York City mayor Eric Adams (D).
