House Republican fundraises with petition to deport Ilhan Omar

Axios learned that a House Republican has redoubled his efforts to deport Somali American Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn. He sent a fundraising message urging supporters sign a petition in this regard.

Why it matters: This is one of the most graphic and recent examples of the incivility which has engulfed Congress in the past few years, and led to a mass exodus of Congress members.

In the news: Rep. Brandon Gill (R-Texas), in an email fundraising titled “Petition to Deport Ilhan Oma”, wrote that “we shouldn’t have let Ilhan Oma into our country.”

Axios obtained a copy of the email. It continues: “America would be a better place if we sent her back to Somalia.”

Zoom out: Gill focused last week on a clip of Omar telling Somalis living in her district they were “not obligated to answer any questions from ICE” and urging them “to learn the laws and to prepare yourself.”

In an email sent on Tuesday, Gill accused Omar “of facilitating a full scale invasion of our nation,” adding that “a normal society would call this treason …”

A Gill spokesperson did not respond immediately to a comment request.

The other side: Omar in a press release said, “It’s truly disgusting that Republican Party members feel emboldened by their racist and frankly fascist comments.”

Omar was a Somali Civil War refugee who came to the U.S. in 1995. He became an American citizen in 2000.

She added, “Representative Gill’s attempt to clout-chase by threatening deportation of a US citizen who is a US citizen on paper because you disagree with him or her is straight out of Donald Trump’s fascist playbook.”

“I hope that Representative Gill stops threatening Americans who disagree with him and learns something about the value of immigrants to this country.”
