AOC Webinar Teaches Illegal Immigrants How to Avoid ICE Deportation

The congressional office of Squad leader Alexandria Ocasio Cortez, who is also the Congresswoman for New York’s 14th District, held a Webinar this week in order to inform immigrants on their rights and ways they can prevent deportation.

The “Know Your Rights with ICE”, a webinar held by Ocasio-Cortez’s office and attorneys with the Immigrant Defense Project on Tuesday, aimed at educating illegal immigrants who are at risk of being deported by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement about their rights and the way ICE collects information and enforces its laws. Straight Arrow News was the first to report on the webinar.

Genia Blser, a lawyer at the Immigrant Defense Project and a member of the webinar, explained that “ICE raids can be political tactics. They’re usually meant to create fear.”

This is a period of great fear. In times of fear, knowledge is key, said Blaser. He told viewers that ICE officers are “often aggressive and encounters can occur very quickly.”

Ocasio-Cortez’s office also provides information on immigrant’s rights via her website. She also urges immigrants who have an open removal order or are “worried” about being picked up by ICE to fill out a privacy form so that her office can get involved. The website states that the office can only provide assistance with immigration cases involving asylum, Visa applications, Deferred Action for Childhood Aliens, and Temporary Protected Status.

On the website of the New York congresswoman, a flyer states that “you do not have” to open the doors for ICE agents. They also don’t have a right to enter a house without a warrant signed by a court. The flyer states that “you can ask them slip the warrant underneath the door.”

It also states that immigrants have the right under the Fifth Amendment to remain silent, and to consult an attorney. Ocasio-Cortez’s website includes a list pro-bono attorneys in New York.

The flyer notes that immigrants who are confronted with ICE agents do not have to sign documents or give personal information without first consulting an attorney. The flyer warns that they should not “lie”.

Ocasio-Cortez is a Democratic Socialist of extreme left who has been vocally against the Trump administration crackdown on illegal immigration. She also expressed her strong feelings against the Laken Riley Act which was passed recently and requires federal agents detaining and deporting illegal immigrants arrested for theft or other property crimes. She called it a “fundamental erosion” of civil rights in a House speech.

She said that if a person was accused of so many crimes, or if someone wanted to accuse someone else of shoplifting, they would be put in a private prison, signed, and deported without ever having a court date.

Ocasio Cortez isn’t the only one of the ‘Squad of House Progressives’ who has offered guidance to illegal immigrants in the face of Trump deportation attempts. Democratic congresswomen Ilhan Omar from Minnesota and Rashida Talib of Michigan have similar “Know Your Rights’ pages on their website.

According to the Minnesota Star Tribune, Omar reintroduced last month the Neighbors not Enemies Act. This is a long shot effort to repeal 1798’s Alien Enemies Act which allowed presidents to detain or deport foreigners deemed to pose a threat to their country.

Omar claimed that the law can be used to target immigrants based on “their nationality” and not on their behavior.
