Poland scrambles military aircraft as Russian missiles target western Ukraine

Operational Command of Poland said that NATO allies Poland launched “military aircraft” into its airspace in response to Russian missile attacks in western Ukraine.
In a post on X, the command stated that military aviation had begun to operate in Polish airspace due to Russian long-range aircraft’s activity, which included strikes against objects in western Ukraine.
The statement said that the operational commander had “activated all forces and resources available to him, and that ground-based radar reconnaissance and air defence systems have reached a readiness state.”
The command stated that the steps taken were to ensure safety in the areas adjacent to the areas under threat. The Operational Command of the Armed Forces monitors the current situation and its subordinate resources and forces remain fully prepared for an immediate response.

After around four hours of operation, the command reported that “no violations of the airspace of Poland were observed”.
It added that the Polish military “is continuously monitoring the situation on the territory of Ukraine, and remains in constant preparation to ensure the safety of Polish airspace.”
Ukraine’s airforce said that Russia had fired 213 drones as well as seven missiles at Ukraine. The air force reported on Telegram that six missiles and 133 unmanned drones had been shot down.
In the early morning hours of Tuesday, air raid warnings were issued for the entire western Ukraine and most of the rest. As Ukraine enters its fourth year of defensive warfare, nightly Russian missile and drone attacks are becoming the norm.
In a social media statement, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the President of Ukraine, said: “Our people are against aerial terror every day.”
According to the Ukrainian Air Force, on Saturday night, Russia launched their largest drone strike ever, firing 267 UAVs towards Ukraine.
Russian and Ukrainian missiles have crossed into the airspace of Poland and other NATO nations at times. Two people died in 2022 by what the Polish Prosecutor’s Office claimed was an Ukrainian S-300 missile which went off course when a Russian attack occurred.
Warsaw claims that at least twice in the past, Russian cruise missiles have briefly breached Polish airspace while en route to Ukraine. After one incident, Poland summoned Russia’s charge d’affaires in order to get an explanation.
During the Russian war against Ukraine, NATO allies Romania as well as Latvia reported violations of airspace by Russian drones.
