IRS: Contractor leaked more than 400k returns

The number provided to House GOP members is higher than initially thought.
This month, the IRS informed House Republicans that a former contractor had leaked private information of over 400,000 taxpayers. That’s nearly six times more than was originally believed.
Doug O’Donnell (Acting IRS Commissioner) told Jim Jordan, House Judiciary Committee Chair, R-Ohio, that the IRS had informed 405,427 tax payers that contractor Charles Littlejohn had leaked their information on their tax returns and other agency forms.
Last year, the agency said it would inform around 70,000 individuals and businesses that Littlejohn leaked their information.

Littlejohn, who was convicted of five years in prison for his disclosures last year, included the returns for President Donald Trump as well as Elon Musk. Elon is currently leading an effort to downsize government.
The New York Times published articles on Trump’s return, while ProPublica featured stories about Musk and other wealthy individuals.
O’Donnell informed Jordan via a letter dated 14 February that about nine out of ten people contacted were business owners. These returns may also contain personal information.
Trump, for example, has previously disclosed that he owns hundreds of pass-through companies, where the owner pays tax on the business through his individual return.
O’Donnell also added that IRS believes that they will need to inform “a relatively few” additional taxpayers about the information that Littlejohn disclosed.
Republicans thought the government should have pursued Littlejohn more aggressively, as he was accused of one count of disclosing information about tax returns without authorization.
O’Donnell will retire from the IRS within the next few days. The announcement comes after Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency requested access to IRS systems, and at the same time that the Trump administration is laying off thousands of employees.
