Columbia University Expels Antisemitic Protesters Who Overtook Campus Building

Columbia University announced on Thursday that it has taken severe disciplinary actions against students involved in the takeover of a campus building in 2024. These actions include suspensions, expulsions, and the revocation of degrees.

The university has been dealing with violent protests since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas War on October 7, 2023. These protests escalated, leading to the occupation of Hamilton Hall in the spring semester of 2024, where a university employee was reportedly held hostage. Several students were arrested during these events.

A spokesperson from the university, speaking to the Daily Caller News Foundation, stated that due to privacy concerns, the names and exact number of students disciplined could not be disclosed. However, the spokesperson confirmed that the university “immediately began disciplinary processes” following the incident in the spring.

The official statement from the university declared, “Today, the Columbia University Judicial Board determined findings and issued sanctions to students ranging from multi-year suspensions, temporary degree revocations, and expulsions related to the occupation of Hamilton Hall last spring. With respect to other events taking place last spring, the UJB’s determinations recognized previously imposed disciplinary action. The return of suspended students will be overseen by Columbia’s University Life Office. Columbia is committed to enforcing the University’s Rules and Policies and improving our disciplinary processes.”

Following a review that concluded the university had not adequately penalized students for their involvement in the protests, the Trump administration, in early March, decided to withdraw $400 million in federal funding from Columbia. In response, the university pledged to intensify its efforts to combat antisemitism on campus.

The Department of Education also took action this Tuesday by sending letters to 60 institutions, warning them of potential enforcement actions due to noncompliance with civil rights laws. These institutions, all of which are currently under investigation or have complaints filed against them for antisemitic incidents, were alerted to the seriousness of their situations.
