OneRepublic bassist to challenge Ken Calvert for Congress

Early Democratic Challengers Emerge to Contest GOP Rep. Ken Calvert in California
With the California primary still a considerable time away, the political landscape is already heating up as two Democratic contenders have thrown their hats into the ring to challenge Republican Representative Ken Calvert. Among them is Tim Myers, a former bassist for the pop rock band OneRepublic, who has transitioned from music to politics with a recent campaign announcement.
Tim Myers: From Music to Politics
Tim Myers, known for his five-year stint with OneRepublic and a solo career in music, has officially announced his candidacy for California’s 41st Congressional District. This district encompasses several cities in the Coachella Valley. Myers, in his campaign launch video, drew parallels between the challenges he faced in the music industry and the current political climate in Washington, D.C. He criticized the leadership, accusing them of prioritizing profit over people’s needs by cutting essential services and engaging in detrimental trade wars.
Myers did not hold back in his criticism of current policies and figures, including former President Trump and entrepreneur Elon Musk, blaming them for a range of issues from healthcare cuts to unnecessary tax breaks for the wealthy. He also targeted Rep. Calvert directly, claiming that Calvert’s long tenure since 1993 has been more beneficial to his personal wealth than to his constituents.
Brandon Riker Joins the Race
Joining Myers in the challenge against Calvert is Brandon Riker, a local entrepreneur and former organizer for Barack Obama’s 2008 campaign. Riker, emphasizing his roots in the district, has campaigned on the promise of fighting for affordable living and protecting essential social services like Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security. He highlighted the local desire for a representative who genuinely advocates for family-supportive policies rather than self-serving career politicians.

Despite the emerging Democratic challengers, Rep. Calvert, who plans to seek re-election in 2026, remains focused on his conservative agenda. According to his senior advisor, Jason Gagnon, Calvert is committed to securing the border, deporting criminal illegal immigrants, and strengthening national defense. Gagnon criticized the Democrats for their selection of candidates, asserting that Rep. Calvert continues to work diligently to fulfill his promises to his constituents and prepare for the upcoming electoral battle against what he describes as radical Democrats.
Shift in District Dynamics
The 41st Congressional District, previously a stronghold for Republicans, experienced significant changes during the 2021 redistricting process. This alteration has introduced new dynamics into the district, incorporating several Coachella Valley cities with areas Calvert had already represented. This shift has led to a more competitive political environment, as evidenced by the close races in recent elections.
Looking Ahead to 2026
As the 2026 elections approach, the focus on California’s 41st district intensifies, with both parties recognizing its critical role in the battle for congressional majority. The district, currently leaning Republican, presents a challenging but pivotal battleground for Democrats aiming to flip control. With the state’s top-two primary system, the race is set to be a significant focal point in the broader national context, shaping up to be a key contest in the fight for the House.
