James Comer Requests DOJ Prosecute Andrew Cuomo For Allegedly Lying To Congress

House Oversight Committee Takes Action Against Andrew Cuomo

Chairman James Comer of the House Oversight Committee has taken a significant step by referring Andrew Cuomo, a current candidate for New York City Mayor, to the Department of Justice for potential criminal charges. Comer accuses the former governor of deliberately misleading Congress about his role in a report that downplayed the number of COVID-19 deaths in New York nursing homes.

Allegations of False Statements

Comer asserts that Cuomo “knowingly and willfully made false statements to Congress” concerning his involvement in the underreporting of nursing home deaths during the pandemic. This referral to Attorney General Pam Bondi for prosecution follows a lack of action from the Biden DOJ on a previous referral by House Republicans in October 2024.

Cuomo had previously testified before the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic, where he discussed his administration’s controversial decision to allow COVID-19 positive patients into nursing homes. House Republicans claim Cuomo’s testimony was a deliberate attempt to evade accountability, describing his statements as “demonstrably false.”

Comer’s Call for Justice

“Andrew Cuomo is a man with a history of corruption and deceit, now caught red-handed lying to Congress,” stated Comer. He emphasized that lying to Congress is a federal crime and insisted that Cuomo should be “prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.” The House Oversight Committee has expressed its readiness to cooperate with the DOJ to ensure Cuomo faces consequences for his actions.

According to a report by State Attorney General Letitia James in 2021, Cuomo’s March 2020 directive, which barred nursing homes from refusing patients based on a COVID-19 diagnosis, resulted in numerous deaths among senior citizens. Investigations revealed that the New York State Department of Health may have undercounted these deaths by nearly 50%.

Response from Cuomo’s Camp

Cuomo’s spokesperson, Rich Azzopardi, dismissed the referral as a baseless political maneuver, criticizing it as an attempt at election interference. He likened it to previous referrals made against other prominent figures, suggesting it was merely a political tactic.

Political Ramifications

Amid these controversies, Cuomo is leading in the polls for the Democratic mayoral primary in New York City. His campaign positions him as a moderate choice in a competitive field. However, New York State Senator Jessica Ramos, a rival in the mayoral race, has raised concerns about Cuomo’s cognitive abilities, likening his potential leadership to “a Joe Biden moment,” indicating doubts about his capacity to effectively govern.

Cuomo’s Previous Resignation

Cuomo resigned from his gubernatorial post in August 2021 amid allegations of sexual harassment detailed in a report by Attorney General Letitia James, which claimed he harassed 11 women and retaliated against those who complained. Cuomo has denied all allegations of wrongdoing.
