Rep. Green’s bill to codify Trump order to prevent military academies from teaching woke curriculum

Legislative Measures to Safeguard U.S. Military Academies from Controversial Curricula
In a bold move on Thursday, a prominent House GOP lawmaker, Representative Mark Green from Tennessee, introduced legislation that seeks to enshrine President Trump’s executive order into law, effectively prohibiting U.S. military academies from incorporating curricula based on radical gender ideologies and critical race theory (CRT). The proposed legislation would ban the use of federal funds for establishing or conducting training on CRT, diversity, equity, and inclusion at prestigious institutions including the U.S. Military Academy, Naval Academy, Air Force Academy, Coast Guard Academy, and Merchant Marine Academy.
Rep. Green’s Firm Stance on CRT
An esteemed West Point alumnus, Rep. Green passionately condemned critical race theory, labeling it as a “Marxist ideology” with detrimental intentions towards American institutions. He criticized CRT for promoting a fundamentally flawed interpretation of America’s founding and its historical narrative. According to Rep. Green, “Critical race theory promulgates a divisive, race-based approach among Americans, particularly those in the armed services, contrary to evaluating people by their character.” He firmly believes that such ideologies are a step backward and threaten the essential unity and effectiveness of military personnel.
Goals of the Proposed Legislation
The primary objective of this legislative proposal is to maintain the integrity and focus of military training. Rep. Green emphasized that U.S. military academies have the crucial role of preparing every servicemember for combat, irrespective of their background. He argued that the divisive nature of CRT could potentially undermine the solidarity essential for combat readiness and national defense.
The legislation, tracing its roots to a White House executive order dated January 27, is currently under consideration to be included in the forthcoming National Defense Authorization Act. This critical bill not only sets defense policies but also sanctions funding for the Pentagon, making its passage imperative.
Countering Previous Implementations of CRT During Biden’s Tenure
|
During the Biden administration, there was a noticeable shift as various CRT-based initiatives were integrated into military training programs. These included mandatory diversity training and the addition of controversial reading materials such as Ibram X. Kendi’s “How to be an Antiracist.” Additionally, some academies introduced “Diversity and Inclusion” as an academic minor, reflecting a broader push towards these progressive ideologies. Prior Republican efforts to eliminate such curricula were thwarted by a Democratic-majority Senate during the debates over the 2024 NDAA.
This legislative effort by Rep. Green and like-minded colleagues represents a significant stride towards restoring traditional educational values in military training, ensuring that service members are prepared for their roles without the imposition of ideologically driven distractions.
