GOP senators push bill requiring Biden declassify all US intelligence connected to Wuhan lab, COVID origins
GOP Senators. Josh Hawley & Mike Braun have reintroduced a bill requiring the Biden administration declassify intelligence related to Wuhan Institute of Virology, and possible links to origins of COVID-19 virus. This is in light of the weekend Department of Energy report that said the coronavirus pandemic was likely caused by a lab leak.
The Senate approved a similar version of the senators bill, the “COVID-19 Origin Act of 2020”, unanimously in May 2021.
“For almost three years, anyone who asked whether COVID-19 was a laboratory leak outbreak originated was silenced and branded a conspiracy theorist,” Hawley (R-Mo.) told Fox News Digital. These prudent skeptics are now vindicated. All intelligence reports pertaining the origins of COVID-19 coronavirus, and the Wuhan Institute of Virology must be immediately classified by the Biden administration. American citizens deserve to know the truth.”
The bill requires the declassification of all information relating to activities of the Wuhan Institute of Virology, or for the People’s Liberation Army coronavirus research, or any related activities at the Wuhan laboratory prior to the outbreak of COVID-19. It also includes information related to Wuhan lab researchers who became ill in autumn 2019, including dates of illness and their roles at the lab.
The bill directs the Director of National Intelligence to prepare a report on the declassified material. He will only make redactions to protect methods and sources – which is the most sensitive information in the intelligence community.
Braun, R.I., said that the Biden administration called the Lab Leak Theory a conspiracy theory since the beginning. They only began to admit they were wrong when the evidence became overwhelming. The Senate passed this bill unanimously in 2021. Since then, the Biden administration has kept COVID’s origins secrets. Americans deserve transparency without government censorship or spin. It is time to release all the information we have about COVID’s origins, and the Wuhan Institute of Virology.
The Wall Street Journal reported Sunday that COVID-19 was “most likely” a result of a laboratory leak.
Journalists who had read the classified report said that the DOE concluded with “low confidence” while the FBI in 2021 concluded that the pandemic resulted from an accidental laboratory leak at “moderate confidence.”
Jake Sullivan, National Security Advisor, stated Sunday that he could not “confirm or discredit” the Wall Street Journal report on the DOE’s conclusion that the COVID-19 pandemic was likely caused by an accidental laboratory leak in China. He also said that there is no definitive answer.
Similar calls to declassify the DOE report have been made in the Republican-controlled House.
Rep. Mike Gallagher (Republican from Wisconsin), who is on the House Intelligence Committee said Monday that “This administration must declassify any relevant intelligence – protecting sources and methods – surrounding the pandemic’s source origins and provide information about who was advising members of the intelligence community, who have dismissed or downplayed a concept of a laboratory leak.”
He stated that “We must also take concrete measures to hold the Chinese Communist Party responsible for their lack transparency around COVID-19.”
