Kamala Harris panned for requiring ID to enter Arizona rally after previously painting voter ID laws as racist
Online, Vice President Harris has been mocked for insisting that campaign rally attendees present an ID issued by the government upon entry. This is despite Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton opposing voter identification laws.
Before Harris’ rally with vice presidential running mate Minnesota Governor. Tim Walz on Friday in Arizona, her campaign sent an email to all supporters advising they would only be admitted if they confirmed their RSVP.
KTAR reported that the email stated that those on the RSVP list had to present a government-issued ID with a matching photo to gain entry to the event.
It wasn’t until Thursday that the exact location of the Phoenix area campaign event was revealed. The announcement for this event first made on July 30 had been made back in July. According to KTAR, the email stated that the event would be held at Desert Diamond Arena located 15 miles north of downtown Phoenix. Attendees will be admitted between 1:30 pm and 3:30 pm on Friday. According to the campaign, Arizona Democratic Party will send “non-transferable invitations” via email on Thursday for Friday’s event.

X users started sharing screenshots from the email, and Harris was lambasted for hypocrisy.
Kevin Sorbo, an actor with 2 million fans, wrote: “Voter identification is racist but you cannot get into a Kamala rallies without ID.”
Nick Sortor, who has more than 448,000 subscribers, wrote: “So let’s get this straight. Requiring an ID to vote is racism… But requiring an ID to attend a Kamala ‘rally” is NOT racist?”
Ian Haworth, another user, said: “You’ll need a photo ID for an invitation-only Kamala Harris function, but not for voting.”
“Kamala Harris needs a photo ID in order to attend a private event.” Kamala Harris does not want photo ID required to vote. Kamala Harris does not want to be required to show ID when crossing our border. Gunther Eagleman, a political commentator on X, also wrote “Weird”.
Fox News Digital contacted the Harris campaign to get a comment but they didn’t immediately respond.
Harris’ first interview in 2021 as Vice President was with Soledad Obrien on BET. The topic of voting laws and changes were discussed.
Harris, speaking about voter ID laws: “I don’t think we should underestimate the potential consequences.” Some people think that this means you have to Xerox your ID or photocopy it to send in as proof of who you are. There are many people, particularly those who live in rural areas, who do not have access to Kinko’s or Office Max. When we talk about voter ID laws it’s important to be clear who you are referring to and what they would need to do to prove their identity.
“Of Course, people must prove who they are. Harris continued, “But not in a manner that makes it nearly impossible for people to prove their identity.”
Harris wrote an op/ed for The Washington Post shortly after Joe Biden, then-candidate, named Kamala Harris as his vice-presidential running-mate in August 2020. The article was written to mark the 100th anniversary since the 19th Amendment gave women the right to vote.
“Unless you are Black. Or Latina. Or Asian. Or Indigenous,” Harris wrote. “And when the 19th Amendment finally was ratified, Black women again were left behind. Poll taxes, literacy exams and other Jim Crow voter suppressing tactics effectively prevented most people of colour from voting.”
The vice-presidential candidate of the time tried to compare modern times.
Harris accused Republicans of doing “everything in their power” to suppress and attack voting rights for people of color.
She wrote: “They’re implementing suppressive voter-ID laws, racial-gerrymandering and voter-roll purges. They’re also closing precincts and reducing early voting days. All of these are targeted at communities of color, since the Supreme Court gutted Voting Rights act in 2013.”
