Trump Faces Elevated Security Threat For Inauguration
The Secret Service agent responsible for the Washington, D.C., Field Office stated Monday that this year’s inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump will have a greater threat than in years past and that a more robust plan is being developed.
According to a video on X, Matt McCool said, “What’s new is that we are now in a more dangerous environment.” He was speaking at a press conference with Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, and other officials.
After the state funeral of President Jimmy Carter and Congress’s certification on Jan. 6, Trump’s victory was certified over Kamala Harris, Vice President.
McCool said that concrete barriers and additional fencing will be added to the existing fencing around the Capitol in preparation for the certification of elections and the funeral of President Carter. McCool was appointed special agent in charge by the Secret Service in D.C. in July. More than 30 miles will be used of anti-scale fencing for the inauguration. This is more than has ever been done before at any NSSE (National Special Security Event).

The Secret Service will continue to use drones in its comprehensive security plan as part of their protective posture. You should not be surprised if you encounter these assets at the inauguration, or during training. Secret Service agents and specialists will be brought in from all over the country by field offices to provide visible and invisible measures of security. “We work with our partners to safeguard this event. Everyone plays an equal role.”
Tom Manger is the chief of U.S. Capitol Police. According to WTTG TV, he said, “the lone actors remain our biggest threat.” Two assassination efforts against Trump were carried out by lone actors last year: Thomas Matthew Crooks, who was in Butler, Pennsylvania in July, and Ryan Wesley Routh, who was in West Palm Beach in Florida in September.
According to WTTG, David Sundberg said that command posts would be operating at both the D.C. office and FBI headquarters.
Sundberg reminded the public that they should remain vigilant, saying: “We do not have any credible or specific threats against the Capitol or the inaugural ceremony.”
On Monday, the FBI and Department of Homeland Security warned of the possibility of “copycat attacks or retaliatory acts” in response to the New Orleans ramming rampage that claimed 14 lives early on New Year’s Day.
Pamela A. Smith said that the entire D.C. Police Department will be active for the presidential inauguration. She added that 4,000 additional officers from all over the United States will also be present as reinforcements, and 7,800 National Guard Members will be activated in D.C.
