Trump urges Congress to pass his agenda in a single, massive bill

On Sunday, Donald Trump, the President-elect of the United States, called on his Republican colleagues in Congress to combine their priorities into a single massive bill which would reduce taxes and strengthen border security while increasing domestic energy production.

Trump said Republicans can cover the cost, which could be trillions of dollars, by increasing tariffs on imported products.

“Republicans need to unite and deliver these historic victories for the American People.” “Get smart, get tough, and quickly send the Bill my way to be signed,” he wrote in his Truth Social platform.

Republicans, who hold both chambers of Congress with narrow majorities, have been considering a complex legislative plan that would allow them to bypass Democratic resistance to increase border spending and to extend Trump’s tax cuts for 2017, which expires this year.

The debate has divided lawmakers over whether they should pass these bills separately or as a package, like Trump wants.

One bill would allow Trump to quickly fulfill his campaign promises, but could alienate legislators who are opposed to certain provisions. Republicans in high-tax states like New York and New Jersey want to alter some of the 2017 federal tax cuts which adversely affected their constituents.

Trump also urges Republicans to eliminate taxes from tipped income. This could increase the cost of the bill.

Republicans intend to use a complex set of budget rules in order to pass these bills without the supermajority required to advance the majority of bills in the Senate. This would allow them to avoid having to appeal to Democrats but would also limit the content of their package.

The Republicans are also on a tightrope in the House of Representatives. Their narrow majority of 219-215 means that they must remain united to pass any legislation.
