Trump’s landslide win resets political landscape

It was like a political quake. The historic White House victory of former President Donald Trump reverberated through Washington, the nation and beyond on Wednesday after an amazing comeback that shocked political expectations, pollsters, and party elite.

The shocking sweep by Mr. Trump in battleground states, and his unexpected victory of Vice President Kamala Harris on the popular vote, became apparent a day after the elections. The results showed that Trump’s victory echoed across the ballot and helped Republicans win the Senate, as well as the House.

The Republican Party has been largely neutralized over the last four years. Mr. Trump’s popularity will likely lead to a Republican sweep of the government. This will increase their chances of implementing President-elect Trump’s proposals for lower taxes, reduced regulation, increased energy production, and cutbacks in government spending.

By Wednesday, his opponents were beginning to accept that Mr. Trump had won more quickly and decisively than anyone expected.

Ms. Harris called former President Trump to concede on Wednesday, before her speech to disgruntled supporters at Howard University (District of Columbia). She congratulated Donald Trump.

Steven Cheung, a Trump spokesman, said that President Trump had acknowledged Vice-President Harris for her professionalism, tenacity and strength throughout the campaign. Both leaders also agreed on the importance to unify the country.

The clear-cut results for both parties quickly reset the political scene in Washington.

No one fought over the closeness of the results or waited days to count ballots.

By 3 am Wednesday morning, Mr. Trump won the race. He had beaten Ms. Harris by a wide margin in the battleground states. And he was shockingly close to gaining the deep blue areas of the United States. On Wednesday evening, Mr. Trump had won in Nevada and Arizona, the two battleground states.

Mr. Trump only lost New Jersey by 4 percentage points. He also flipped many blue counties in Florida, including Miami-Dade.

His victories in swing states were significant.

In Pennsylvania, where pollsters had declared the state deadlocked just a day prior to the election, Mr. Trump defeated Ms. Harris with nearly 144,000 votes.

In Georgia, he was able to surpass her by almost 120,000 votes, and, as in Pennsylvania, he lost the election in 2020.

As of late on Wednesday, Mr. Trump secured 295 Electoral Votes, 25 more than was needed to win. He is also on course to exceed 300.

It was a landslide.

Wednesday was a day of shock, self-reflection and euphoria among Republicans and Democrats over the magnitude and scale of Donald Trump’s win.

Vivek Ramaswamy, a former presidential candidate and Trump’s ally, said: “March 2023 seemed like a distant future.” “Now it’s reality.”

The stock market soared 1,508 point, reaching a new record of 43,730.

The transition team of the president-elect, which has met for several weeks, is preparing a second Trump Administration, while House and Senate Republicans plan legislation that they can pass through both chambers to send him.

First, it is likely that a measure to extend individual tax cuts expiring, which may include additional tax savings, will be dealt with.

Mike Johnson, a Louisiana Republican and House Speaker, said: “We saved America.” “We’re ready to start working for the American people,” said House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Louisiana Republican.

Mitch McConnell congratulated Donald Trump, the new president. McConnell is a Kentucky Republican who has been a long-time Trump critic but he ultimately endorsed Trump’s candidacy. He pointed out that Trump is the only president to have won a second term without a consecutive one since 1892.

McConnell stated that “what he has accomplished is the first time since Grover Cleveland.”

He praised Mr. Trump’s campaign for “running a sharper operations this time.”

In 2020, Mr. Trump narrowly lost to President Biden. This sparked national unrest as well as Republican claims that the election had been rigged.

Mr. Trump refused to concede the race in 2014, and his critics, such as Mr. McConnell blamed him for inciting a riot on Jan. 6, 2021 at the U.S. Capitol. Mr. Trump had encouraged demonstrators to “march peacefully and patriotically.”

Trump’s political revival is now complete. He achieved the goal that McConnell had set for himself, as he steps down after two decades in leadership.

Mr. Biden who was forced to drop out of the 2024 presidential race in favor Ms. Harris called Mr. Trump Wednesday to congratulate him and to invite him to come to the White House for the planning the transition.

The result was an utter defeat for Mr. Biden’s vice president, and his policies. Critics claim that they led to a near-historic level of inflation, a rise in interest rates, and escalating conflicts overseas.

Mark Mitchell, Rasmussen Reports’ pollster, said: “Listen to me. They are going blame Harris for this.” “She was not a perfect candidate but, let’s face it, she did the best she could.” She saved Democrats against an even larger R landslide. “Biden and the Democrats created this mess.”
