“Alligator Alcatraz” plan pitched by Florida’s AG

Florida Plans to Construct “Alligator Alcatraz” Detention Center in the Everglades
James Uthmeier, Florida’s Attorney General, has proposed a bold new strategy for addressing illegal immigration by constructing a detention facility in the Everglades, whimsically dubbed “Alligator Alcatraz.” This innovative solution takes advantage of the natural geography to ensure security, leveraging the local wildlife which includes alligators and pythons, to deter escapes from the facility.
Strategic Advantages of the Everglades Location
Uthmeier highlighted the practical benefits of the selected site, which spans 39 square miles at the Miami Dade-Collier Training and Transition Airport. The site’s remote location, he noted, offers a cost-effective solution for the perimeter security of the detention center. Furthermore, this location is strategically chosen not only for its natural deterrents but also because it features an airstrip. This will facilitate the transport of detainees directly to the facility, streamlining the process significantly.
With an estimated completion time between 30 to 60 days post-construction commencement, the facility is projected to accommodate up to 1,000 illegal immigrants. This initiative represents a significant opportunity for state-county cooperation. “This presents a great opportunity for the state of Florida to work with Miami Dade and Collier counties,” Uthmeier said, emphasizing the collaborative aspect of this project.
Uthmeier’s Stance on Immigration and Legal Developments
Known for his firm conservative views on immigration, Uthmeier has been an unyielding advocate for stringent immigration laws and has shown unabashed support for President Trump’s robust immigration policies. His commitment was underscored recently when a federal judge found him in civil contempt for contravening a ruling that paused the implementation of a new Florida law. This law would criminalize illegal entry into the state. Defiantly, Uthmeier stated on X, “If being held in contempt is what it costs to defend the rule of law and stand firmly behind President Trump’s agenda on illegal immigration, so be it.”

This stance and the proposed “Alligator Alcatraz” facility reflect a broader commitment to securing the borders and ensuring that the sanctity of American law is upheld, mirroring the priorities of the Trump administration.
