Boeing 747s leaving China for Iran, raising concerns amid Israel’s conflict

Speculation Surrounds Boeing 747s Travelling From China to Iran
Recently observed activities involving several Boeing 747s departing from China to Iran have raised eyebrows, with the planes detected on radar over the past week. From June 14th, FlightRadar24 has tracked at least five flights making their way from China to Iran. As reported by The Telegraph, these “mystery transport planes” traversed westward across northern China, crossing countries like Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan before losing track on radar near Iran.
Implications of the Flights Amid Israel-Iran Tensions
The type of aircraft involved, commonly used for transport purposes, has led to discussions about the possibility of China aiding its ally, Iran, during ongoing conflicts with Israel. This speculation is particularly pointed given the lack of official confirmation regarding the contents or purpose of the flights. Robert Greenway, director of the Heritage Foundation’s Center for National Defense, touched on the significance of China’s relationship with the Middle East, particularly Iran, during an appearance on “The Ingraham Angle.” He noted that China derives a substantial portion of its oil and gas from Iran and benefits economically from buying sanctioned oil at below-market prices.
Highlighting recent incidents, such as a large explosion in Iran’s Bandar-Abbas port involving Chinese missile propellant, Greenway suggested that the flights might be Iran relocating valuable resources or personnel. He expressed doubts about the likelihood of these flights being used for arms shipments given the current risks and China’s quiet stance on the conflict.
Iran and China’s Long-Term Cooperation Strategy
In 2021, Tehran and Beijing formalized their alliance with a 25-year cooperation agreement celebrated in Iran’s capital. According to University of Tehran Professor Mohammad Marandi, this strategic partnership goes beyond the written agreement and is a response to U.S. efforts to isolate the two nations. It aims at forging a robust roadmap for long-term relations.
Contrary Claims Regarding the Mysterious Flights

Tuvia Gering, an Atlantic Council fellow, provided a different perspective on X, citing an aviation expert to downplay the significance of these flights. He revealed that the routes are commonly used by a Luxembourg-based cargo company transporting goods from China to Europe, with a usual stopover in Turkmenistan, just short of the Iranian border. Gering also explained that due to signal losses, the projected paths on some tracking sites wrongfully indicate the planes enter Iranian airspace, despite them habitually landing in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan.
US-Israel Relations and Potential Intervention in Iran
With tensions escalating between Iran and Israel, the possibility of U.S. involvement has become a topic of significant discussion. President Donald Trump has made clear his stance that Iran must not obtain nuclear weapons. Recently, while addressing the ongoing conflicts, Trump hinted at possible actions, expressing frustration over Iran not engaging in negotiations earlier. This direct approach underlines the U.S’s firm position against Iran’s nuclear ambitions and hints at further strategic discussions scheduled among national security leaders.
