British Prime Minister Concedes Men Pretending To Be Women Are Not Women

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s Stance on Transgender Definition

In a significant shift from his previous views, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has now aligned with the Supreme Court’s ruling that legally defines a “woman” based on biological sex. This decision came after the court’s unanimous agreement that the term “woman” in the 2010 Equality Act pertains strictly to biological sex, not self-declared gender identity.

When questioned by The Independent about whether “trans women are women,” a phrase he once supported, Starmer’s spokesperson responded with a definitive “no.” Starmer himself reinforced this position in an interview with ITV News, stating, “A woman is an adult female, and the court has made that absolutely clear.” He expressed his approval of the judgment, emphasizing the clarity it brings to policy guidance.

This reversal marks a dramatic change for the Labour leader, who had previously asserted in 2022 that “trans women are women” was not only his belief but was also supported by British law.

Implications of the Supreme Court Decision

The recent court ruling has reignited discussions in British politics regarding the legal and public policy treatment of sex. This decision is particularly pivotal as it suggests a move by Starmer’s government towards a biological understanding of sex, potentially appealing to a wider electorate. This shift comes at a critical time as recent YouGov UK polls indicate a close race among the Tories, Labour, and the Reform Party.

Despite the clarification on the definition of “woman,” the ruling does not affect the UK’s existing legal procedures for gender recognition. Individuals identifying as the opposite sex can still obtain a “gender recognition certificate,” which changes their sex on official documents. However, the court specified that this certificate does not qualify individuals to be recognized as women for specific legal purposes, such as board quotas or access to single-sex spaces, thereby upholding biological sex as the legal standard.

Starmer’s Shift Towards Conservative Policies

This is not the first instance of Starmer adopting a stance typical of conservative politics. His government recently introduced emergency legislation to stop new Sentencing Council guidelines, which would have considered an offender’s ethnic, cultural, or religious background in sentencing. This move was criticized by Conservative MP Robert Jenrick and others as promoting a “two-tiered” justice system.

Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood, also from the Labour Party, criticized the proposed guidelines for promoting “differential treatment” and highlighted that equality before the law is crucial for public confidence in the justice system. The Sentencing Council postponed the implementation of these guidelines following the legislative intervention.

The series of shifts in Labour’s approach suggests a strategic recalibration of the party’s platform in preparation for the next general election, which is scheduled for 2029, although the prime minister has the authority to call a snap election sooner.
