IAF on ‘highest alert level’ for Houthi missiles, drones

The Houthis have declared that their hostile actions against Israel are a show of support for Gaza amidst stalled discussions between Hamas and Israel. In response, Israel is bracing for potential missile attacks from the Yemen-based Houthis, following intense U.S. airstrikes on the group and ongoing threats from its leaders.
A report from the Hebrew-language news source Mako indicates that the Israeli Air Force has escalated its alert status to the highest level. This decision came after a Houthi missile, possibly intended for Israel, detonated in Egypt’s Sinai Desert near Sharm el-Sheikh, roughly 224 kilometers (130 miles) from Israel’s southern border.
Since October 2023, the Houthis have launched numerous explosive drones and missiles towards Israel. Many of these attacks have seemed to intentionally target civilian areas, including the destruction of an elementary school in Ramat Gan and a park in southern Tel Aviv. Although these attacks resulted in only one Israeli fatality, they caused millions to seek refuge in bomb shelters, often disrupted from their sleep.
Recently, Houthi leaders announced plans to renew attacks on vessels associated with Israel and did not dismiss the possibility of targeting Israel directly, especially after Israel halted humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.

In retaliation to the Houthi’s hundreds of missile and drone attacks on American and allied naval vessels since October 2023, President Donald Trump initiated a series of bombings on the Houthi stronghold in Sana’aa on Saturday evening. The Houthis have condemned these bombings as a “war crime,” claiming numerous casualties and promising retribution.
On Sunday, the Houthis dispatched at least 11 explosive drones targeting the U.S. aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman stationed in the Red Sea. According to Trump administration officials who spoke to Reuters, these drones were intercepted well before they could pose any real threat to the vessel.
A Houthi spokesperson confirmed that the group had launched another round of drone attacks on the Truman on Sunday morning and vowed to persist with their assaults until the Israeli “siege” on Gaza is lifted.
