Middle East latest: Israel intercepts Houthi missile fired from Yemen
Israel’s military claimed it intercepted an Iranian-made missile that was fired at the country from Yemen by Houthi rebels. The missile set off sirens in Tel Aviv and other central areas late on Monday.
The Houthis are firing drones and rockets at Israel as well as attacking ships in the Red Sea Corridor. They say they won’t stop their attacks until Israel agrees on a ceasefire with the Gaza Strip.
According to the Health Ministry of Gaza, Israel’s war on Gaza has resulted in more than 45 500 deaths, including over half women and children. The Health Ministry’s total does not distinguish between civilians and combatants. Health Ministry reported Monday that Israeli bombardments and airstrikes killed at least 27 people in the last day. Israel claims that its forces are only targeting militants.
Ukraine has pledged its support to the new Syrian government, which ousted Bashar al-Assad, a Russian ally who was a major player in the Middle East. On Monday, the Ukrainian Foreign Minister met with Syria’s De facto Leader during a trip to Damascus.

UN updates humanitarian situation in Gaza
The United Nations humanitarian agency announced Monday that Israel had allowed a U.N. team and a Palestinian Red Crescent to deliver food, water and medical supplies to patients in the northern Gaza area a day before.
U.N. reported that Israeli soldiers had forced the patients to leave the Kamal Adwan Hospital located in northern Gaza, and taken them to an Indonesian hospital, which was not operating. Israeli soldiers detained some of these patients later.
The U.N.’s humanitarian office, OCHA, said that “ten patients were evacuated (from the Indonesian) hospital. Four of them were arrested by Israeli troops at the checkpoint exiting the area.”
The report stated that “seven patients, along with 15 caregivers or health workers, remain in the facility. It is severely damaged and unable to provide medical treatment.”
The U.N. Humanitarian Office warns that Israel’s assault on Gaza’s health care, humanitarian aid, and daily strikes that kill or injure civilians is destroying the Palestinians’ ability to survive.
OCHA stresses that access to Gaza for humanitarian aid remains restricted.
It said that “in the past three day, more than 60% of the 42 U.N. coordinated movements have been denied, interfered or obstructed on the ground”.
Israeli military claims it intercepted missiles fired from Yemen
TEL AVIV (Israel) — Israel’s army said that it intercepted an Iranian-made missile fired by Yemeni rebels. The missile set off sirens in Tel Aviv and central Israel late Monday night. Magen David Ado, Israel’s emergency service, reported no injuries.
The Houthis are firing drones and rockets at Israel, as well as attacking ships in the Red Sea Corridor. They say they won’t stop their attacks until Israel agrees on a ceasefire with the Gaza Strip.
In response to the missile strikes, Israel launched two intense waves of strikes in Yemen over the past few weeks. This latest launch increases the possibility of Israeli retaliation.
On Monday, Israeli U.N. Danny Danon, the ambassador of Israel to the U.N., has vowed that his country will take decisive action against Houthi attacks.
Wounded Palestinians report harsh treatment from Israeli soldiers after they were expelled from a hospital
GAZA CITY (Gaza Strip) — Palestinians wounded by Israeli soldiers who expelled them from a Gaza hospital in the north over the weekend have described horrific conditions, where they were forced for hours to strip to their underwear and endure cold weather.
Wissam Warsch, 45, a father of five and a 45 year old who was treated at Kamal Adwan Hospital for almost a week said: “They burned the buildings surrounding the hospital.” He claimed that soldiers forced Dr. Hussam Ab Safiya to bring all of the patients out before detaining the director.
Warsh reported that “they told him over loudspeaker he had 10 mins to evacuate the hospital, and then they started firing shells all around the facility as a form of pressure.” He was recuperating with other patients at Ahli Hospital, Gaza City. On Sunday he spoke from a bed to The Associated Press.
Israel’s army claims that its troops entered the Hamas hospital to stop them from using it as a Hamas base. They also claim over 240 militants, including Abu Safiya, were arrested. Officials at the hospital have denied these claims.
Some patients reported that the Israeli army had refused to give them food or water.
“The worst part was the fact that we were cold in winter, and could not find any clothes. “All the moments were hard,” said Ramadan Al-Aswad who was a hospital patient.
The staff at Kamal Adwan Hospital claim that it has been repeatedly hit over the last three months, as Israeli forces wage a war against Hamas fighters who, according to the army, have regrouped north of Gaza. Israel has effectively cut off food and medical aid to the areas of Jabaliya Beit Hanoun Beit Lahiya.
Syria’s new leaders crack down on alleged Assad-loyalist militias
ADRA, Syria – The new Syrian government has said that it sent dozens of soldiers to the Damascus suburb Adra, on Monday, in search of suspected militiamen loyalists of ousted President Bashar al-Assad. Military police vehicles were seen transporting detainees.
Abu Yaarub said that a security campaign in Adra led to the arrests of militia leaders. He also said that five of the top militiamen had been detained.
Last week, clashes erupted in several Syrian cities between Assad’s supporters and the newly formed government led by Islamist rebels.
Activists and monitors claim that since Assad’s downfall, dozens of Syrians were killed as a result of revenge. The vast majority of these victims are from the Alawite minority, a branch of Shiite Islam, to which Assad is a member.
The family of Gaza hospital director pleads for release
After Dr. Hussam Ab Safiya was detained by Israeli soldiers over the weekend, his family is appealing to the international community for his release.
Abu Safiya’s family claims that he is denied medical treatment and kept in freezing cold conditions in Sde Teiman. This Israeli detention facility has been criticized heavily for its harsh inhumane conditions.
According to Israeli military spokesperson Lt. Col. Nadav Schoshani, Abu Safiya is “currently being questioned about his possible involvement in terrorist activities.”
Israeli soldiers have expelled the staff and patients of Kamal Adwan Hospital over the weekend. They detained 240 militants, whom they said, and brought them to Israel for questioning. The military claimed that some militants tried to pose as ambulance drivers and hide in them without providing any evidence.
Israel claimed that Hamas was using the hospital, but hospital officials denied this.
