The rise of 40% in applications is believed to be due to Donald Trump’s election and the British tax reforms.

Last year, the number of Americans who applied for UK citizenship reached its highest level ever. Donald Trump’s return as president and UK tax reforms were both factors that contributed to this surge.

Last year, more than 6,100 US citizens submitted applications. This is the highest number since records began in 1990 and 26% higher than 2023. The total number of applications for UK citizenships increased by 6 percent to 251,000. This is another record.

According to Home Office data, the number of applications from US citizens increased by 40 percent in the last quarter 2024, to 1,700.

Immigration lawyers say that Trump’s re-election campaign and victory early in November, as well as UK tax changes encouraging Americans before their departure to obtain British passports, contributed to the increase.

Elena Hinchin, partner of law firm Farrer & Co said that the US political environment was “a serious driver” for increased interest in UK residence.

She said, “We’ve seen a significant increase in interest from Americans for citizenship since the campaigning leading up to the elections.” “There is much more interest in the current Trump administration than before.”

Hinchin said that the UK’s abolishment of non-dom status tax had also encouraged wealthy Americans who lived in Britain to apply for citizenship before leaving.

She said that many high-net worth individuals were considering leaving the UK due to the new tax laws. They want to apply now for citizenship so they don’t loose the right to do this. It keeps the door wide open, and gives their children more flexibility.”

For someone to apply for UK citizenship they must have lived in Britain for at least five years, or their parents have British citizenship. You can also apply for UK citizenship if you are married to a Brit, and have lived there for at least three years.

Home Office data show that American applications have steadily increased since the end 2022.

Madeleine Sumption of Oxford University’s Migration Observatory said that the data showed Americans were “particularly eager” to obtain citizenship last year. However, she cautioned people have many personal reasons as to why they seek citizenship abroad.

She said: “For people who are moving from countries that are safe, politics is usually a third- or fourth-order factor and not the main reason to move on their own.”

Ono Okeregha is the director of the Immigration Advice Service. She said that there was “a huge spike” in British nationality searches on the day following the US election. Interest in visas and citizenship has continued since Trump’s turbulent second term.

He said that US citizenship applications began to increase a few year ago. This was due to what he termed the “aftermath” of Donald Dash, as people who immigrated to Britain from 2016-2020 during Trump’s term as President became eligible for UK nationality.

Data shows that Americans with Irish ancestry have also increased their applications for citizenship in Ireland.
