Tram set on fire in Amsterdam riot as tensions remain high

On Monday night, riots broke out in a suburb of Amsterdam, the Dutch Capital, as protesters destroyed public infrastructure.
The riots in Nieuw-West come amid a state-of-emergency in the city after the violence surrounding the football match between Ajax Tel Aviv and Maccabi Tel Aviv on Thursday.
Local media reported that a tram had been set ablaze, and several cars were damaged by the stones hurled at them by rioters.
The fire was quickly put out by police, and riot squads cleared the square. It was unclear who caused the unrest, or if it had anything to do with last week’s violence.
They noted that the atmosphere was tense, as five people were hospitalized and dozens of others detained after the Maccabi Tel Aviv vs Ajax match on Thursday.
Amsterdam’s mayor said that youths were on scooters or foot, searching for Israeli fans. They punched and kicked them, then fled to avoid police.
Images of the violence on Monday showed dozens armed with sticks, firecrackers and other explosives damaging property.
Minors are included in five new arrests
The Dutch police announced Monday five new arrests as part of their investigation into the earlier violence.
The suspects range in age from 18 to 37 years old and come from Amsterdam or the surrounding areas. Four suspects are still being held in custody, while the fifth was released and remains a suspected.
Police had earlier said that the four men arrested last week will remain in custody as long as the investigation continues.

The police say that two of the men were minors: a 16-year old and a 17 year-old, both from Amsterdam.
The police have said that they have identified more than 170 witnesses, and taken forensic evidence in dozens of cases.
The mayor of Amsterdam banned all protests in the city, and declared certain areas as risk zones. Police can now stop anyone and conduct a check.
