Trump says the US and Iran have ‘sort of’ agreed on the terms for a nuclear deal

Progress in U.S.-Iran Nuclear Negotiations
President Donald Trump recently indicated that the United States and Iran are nearing an agreement on nuclear terms, suggesting a potential breakthrough in their discussions. Speaking to reporters in Doha, Qatar, Trump highlighted the ongoing “very serious negotiations” aimed at establishing long-term peace. He expressed optimism about the progress made in talks led by American envoy Steve Witkoff and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.
Despite the positive developments, Trump reiterated that military action remains on the table should the negotiations falter, emphasizing that Iran has tentatively agreed to halt its nuclear ambitions in what he termed a “friendly way.”
Iran’s Concessions and Demands
A senior Iranian official, Ali Shamkhani, confirmed Iran’s willingness to dismantle its highly enriched uranium stockpiles, limit uranium enrichment to levels suitable for civilian use, and permit international inspections. In exchange, Iran is seeking the immediate removal of all economic sanctions.
Trump has maintained a clear stance throughout the discussions, asserting that Iran must not possess nuclear weapons, a point he believes needs no elaborate explanation.
Additional Conditions and Regional Diplomacy

While in Saudi Arabia, addressing leaders from the Gulf Cooperation Council, Trump expanded on his conditions for Iran, demanding an end to its support for terrorism and proxy wars, alongside a permanent cessation of its nuclear weapons program.
Concluding his visit to the Gulf, Trump visited U.S. troops stationed at Al-Udeid Air Base in Qatar, where he emphasized his commitment to ending conflicts rather than initiating them. However, he assured the troops of his readiness to use American power to defend national or allied interests if necessary.
Trump’s Engagements in the United Arab Emirates
Following his time in Qatar, Trump traveled to Abu Dhabi, where he visited the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and was scheduled for a state visit hosted by UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. During his visit, Trump admired the mosque’s architecture and participated in customary practices, reflecting his respect for local traditions.
Policy Shifts and Diplomatic Interactions
Earlier in the week, Trump met with Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa and announced a shift in U.S. policy by easing sanctions on Syria. He praised al-Sharaa’s leadership qualities and indicated that discussions with regional leaders, including Saudi Arabian Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, influenced his decision.
Trump also critiqued former President Joe Biden’s diplomatic approach, particularly highlighting a controversial fist bump with the Saudi crown prince, contrasting it with his own interactions during his visit, which involved more traditional and warm handshakes.
