Colin Allred ‘seriously considering’ 2026 Senate bid for John Cornyn’s seat

Colin Allred Considers 2026 Senate Challenge
Former U.S. Representative Colin Allred, speaking at a recent event, expressed his ongoing deliberation over entering the 2026 Senate race against incumbent John Cornyn or another Republican candidate emerging from what is anticipated to be a fiercely competitive GOP primary. This event, hosted by Principles First, marked Allred’s first public engagement since his electoral defeat to Republican Ted Cruz.
Allred’s Political Reflections and Future Prospects
In a pre-event interview with The Dallas Morning News, Allred shared his reflections on his previous Senate campaign and his current life priorities, which include spending quality time with his family. He indicated a decision about re-running could be expected by this summer, emphasizing the critical importance of continued political involvement.
Meanwhile, John Cornyn has already kick-started his campaign, and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is considering a run, alongside other potential Republican candidates like U.S. Reps. Beth Van Duyne and Wesley Hunt. Texas Republican Party Chairman Abraham George confidently stated that the GOP nominee, whoever it may be, would triumph over Allred or any other Democratic contender.
Engagement and Advocacy Post-Election
Despite stepping back from the public eye since November, Allred has been active behind the scenes, meeting with donors and activists. He also mentioned the possibility of running for Dallas mayor in 2027, though he remains non-committal at this stage.

Allred’s appearance at the Principles First event was part of his broader appeal to all political sides to engage actively in community and political spheres, particularly in opposition to policies from the Trump administration. He criticized several of Trump’s decisions and appointments, highlighting the need for more qualified leadership in critical roles.
Allred’s Critique of Trump’s Policies
During the discussion, Allred took the opportunity to critique the Trump administration’s approach to governance, including its tariff policies and certain cabinet appointments. He argued that such policies were detrimental to Texas’s status as a leading trade state and criticized the lack of qualification among some of Trump’s appointees.
Republican Party Chairman George, however, dismissed Allred’s comments as mere partisan criticism, praising Trump’s adventurous and effective leadership.
Looking Back at the 2024 Senate Campaign
Allred reflected on his challenging 2024 Senate campaign, noting the external factors and general atmosphere that complicated the electoral process. He acknowledged the shortcomings in the Democratic Party’s strategy and emphasized the necessity for ongoing activism and involvement beyond just election cycles.
Concluding his remarks, Allred reiterated his commitment to staying engaged in politics and community service, even as he cherishes the time with his family, which has been a significant focus for him post-campaign.
