Connecticut court upholds $965 million verdict against Alex Jones in Sandy Hook case
In its unanimous decision, the court cited “traumatic threats and harassing” that families suffered “as a result of the lies, propagated by defendants, claiming the Sandy Hook Massacre was a hoax.”
The Connecticut Appellate Court affirmed on Friday a $965-million verdict against conspiracy theorist Alex Jones from 2022, determining that there is “sufficient evidence” for the damages awarded to the relatives of Sandy Hook Elementary School victims and an FBI Agent.
In a unanimous ruling, the court noted the “traumatic harassment and threats” that families suffered “as a result of the lies propagated by defendants” about the Sandy Hook hoax.
The 62-page ruling states that “our review of the records reveals there was enough evidence to support $965,000,000 in compensatory damage awarded by the jury.” This is the largest jury award in Connecticut’s history.

Jones was granted a reprieve of $150 million by the appellate court. The court determined that the plaintiffs had “failed” to make a claim under Connecticut’s Unfair Trade Practices Act. It also determined that the lower court had awarded $150 million in punitive damage.
In a press release, Jones’ lawyer Norm Pattis said, “We are relieved that the Court has protected the Press with its decision reversing damages in the unfair trading practices claim. But we are disappointed in other ways.” He claimed that the jury was “sold an untruth” and told to believe that Jones had made millions by spreading conspiracy theories regarding the Sandy Hook mass murder.
“He didn’t. The jury was also led to believe that Mr. Jones was responsible for all of the suffering that the plaintiffs suffered. Pattis stated that it wasn’t. “We had hoped that the Appellate Court could see through the farce and charade of this trial. It didn’t.”
Jones owes roughly $1.2 billion in total, including $965 million paid to Connecticut families as well as nearly $50 million awarded to parents of the Sandy Hook child killed by a Texas jury.
Jones filed for bankruptcy in 2022 and the sale his Infowars platform was part of this case. The Onion, a satirical media outlet, is expected to make a bid to purchase Infowars in a Texas courtroom on Monday. A judge will decide whether the bankruptcy auction was conducted properly. Jones accuses the company of collusion and fraud.
Attorneys representing the Sandy Hook families have hailed Friday’s decision by the Connecticut appellate Court as a victory for all.
The Connecticut Appellate Court unanimously rejected Alex Jones’s attempt to overturn the historic jury verdict against him and Infowars. The jury’s $965-million rebuke against Jones will stand and the families that have fought valiantly over years have brought Alex Jones one step closer to justice,” said the lawyers in a press release.
Pattis has said that he will request the Connecticut Supreme Court review the decision of the appellate court.
Jones told his followers repeatedly that the 2012 shootings in which 20 first-graders and six teachers were killed was staged by ‘crisis actors’ to push for more gun control.
The appellate court determined also that a lower judge “properly used its discretion” when it found Jones and Infowars parent company Free Speech Systems LLC. liable for default damages for not cooperating with court rules regarding sharing evidence.
