Cuomo dominates a mayoral field he hasn’t yet entered, third-party poll finds

Former Governor. Andrew Cuomo trounces Mayor Eric Adams and the other candidates in the Democratic mayoral race Cuomo hasn’t yet joined but his flaws are among the best of all the candidates according to a poll by a third party.

The famous Cuomo won the most votes with a 32 percent margin of the vote when potential Democratic people were asked select their favorite candidate in the race-based election. In his place was the city’s former Comptroller Scott Stringer at 10 percent and the successor Brad Lander at 8 percent and state Senator. Jessica Ramos at 7 percent and Adams as well as the state Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani at 6 percent.

A former Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. The former Bronx Borough President, who stated that the Bronx Borough President will not be a candidate for the mayor’s office, was tied with Ramos with 7 percent. The candidate Michael Blake came in at 2 percent and state senator. Zellnor Myrie at 1 percent. 18 percent of voters saying they were not sure which candidate to pick and 3 percent choosing “other.”

“As regards mayors I’m in favor of Eric Adams as long as there’s a chance for him to run. That’s all I can add,” Diaz Jr. stated.

This poll took place earlier in the election cycle between December. 16 between Dec. 16 and Dec. 22 and is motivated by popularity of the candidate’s name. The primary election is scheduled for June 24, but the majority of candidates are waiting for matching funds from the taxpayer and haven’t yet aired advertisements on television. Independent expenditures are yet to be compiled either. The city’s political class is eager to see how the indictment Adams legal case goes down and if Cuomo decides to enter the arena.

The poll offered a ranked-choice sample that indicated Cuomo winning the first round with 39 percent compared to Stringer’s 12.5. In the hypothetical scenario, Cuomo surpasses the 50 percent threshold to win in the fifth round of voting and Stringer remaining in second place with 16 percent, as well Ramos and Lander tied with 14 percent. Diaz Jr. makes it to the fifth ballot with 10 percent.

The study shows that Adams — who was elected in 2021’s first mayoral race based on ranked choicewas not a beneficiary of the fairly new method. He was at 8 percent during the first to fourth round until he was sacked. The second mayor of the city, Black Mayor, Adams is warning of race-based disparities in ranked choice voting methods.

The study, conducted through POLITICO was ordered from Progressives for Democracy in America which is which is a 501(c)(4) established “to rectify the general population’s lack of engagement with politics and public policy between elections.”

The executive director of the group, Alan Minsky, said that he paid for the poll to determine the current state of the Democratic primary for the position of mayor. “We commissioned the poll to see which candidates might be competitive with Cuomo, given his huge name recognition advantage,” Minsky explained.

Minsky’s team has hired Washington located Hart Research Associates to conduct the survey of 800 potential Democratic voters.

The numbers for Adams are shocking and are in line with polls that show his support is falling — long before federal prosecutors indicted him last September over an alleged corruption scheme. Since then, many members of his scandal-plagued inner circle have been ousted or fired at the direction of the governor. Kathy Hochul — an Adams allies -and his city’s Campaign Finance Board has denied Adams matching funds. Federal prosecutor’s offices in Manhattan have announced they are planning to file a superseding indictment also, even though time is running out. Trump is the president elect. Donald Trump, who will swear in on January. 20th, has indicated that he is open to pardoning Adams.

Seventy-one percent of respondents had that they had a negative opinion of Adams with only 22 percent of respondents expressing an optimistic view. Cuomo had a 48-44 positive response. Other candidates received negatives ranging from 5 percent for Blake and 20 percent for Stringer.

The New York Times/Siena poll of 853 likely voters from October discovered Cuomo outstripping Adams 21,01% to 11,01% in a head-tohead survey. This poll also includes the Attorney General Letitia James who received similar support to Cuomo but has no plans to run for the mayor’s office. James was not included in Hart’s poll.

Cuomo -who resigned from his governorship in 2021 amid allegations of sexual harassment, which he denies — is considering a run for mayor, while remaining in the dark about his plans.

The former governor and the mayor share a common base of Black and conservative Jewish as well as Latino voters, and they are especially moderate Democrats who do not support the policies of criminal justice that are left-leaning. Should Adams decide to go ahead with his reelection plan, Adams would have a very narrow road to victory but Cuomo is firmly blocking his path.

“When people unbiasedly look at this administration they’re going to say pound for pound, this is one of the greatest administrations in the history of the city,” Adams stated to POLITICO in an interview in recent times, making the case for his difficult run for reelection. “Turned around our economy out of Covid, cycled us out Covid, cycled us out of the greatest humanitarian crisis this city has ever seen, cycled us out of the public safety issues, cycled us out of the economic issue.”

“When people go back and look over it and I’m in the New York City museum, they’re going to say wow, this dyslexic, South Jamaica, public school-educated mayor — blue collar — did something no one thought he could do,” Adams said. “No one thought I was able to govern this city; no one.”

To the poll, Adams pollster Ben Tulchin stated, “Any polling is very premature — voters’ real feelings won’t be clear until they’ve had a chance to be reminded of what Eric has accomplished, including reducing crime, and where any opponents have failed.”

The lower the score for an individual candidate, the better chances they have of influencing the public’s opinions.

Cuomo’s possible rivalsshould he be in the race have already stated that they’ll be after him regardless of whether Adams does not have the money to pursue them. His long-running involvement in the New York political scene allows potential rivals to exploit his weaknesses and the scandals that forced his from office.

Apart from the allegations of sexual harassment made against Cuomo, Cuomo also weathered criticism for his treatment of the policies of nursing homes during Covid. The health crisis that erupted in the public sphere initially brought him to the forefront of national attention however, he was also under scrutiny for the way his administration was able to report the deaths of residents in nursing homes and also the controversial decision which prevented nursing homes from denying patients who had been diagnosed with Covid.

Cuomo claims there was no wrongdoing and claimed that his critics have played politics by bringing up the issuewhich is backed by an earlier Department of Justice report that concluded that Trump administration officials tried to make the issue more prominent ahead of the 2020 presidential election.

The former governor’s staff has also expressed a sense of vindication following the fact that some of those who had accused Cuomo of a shady behavior ended her lawsuit against Cuomo. Cuomo later filed a suit against his accuser of defamation.

A Stringer advisor was warned in an memo in the year 2000 that the public would be sour about the Cuomo run for the mayor’s office. And Lander was adamant about Cuomo at a fundraising event this week for “not the leadership we need for New York City.” (Stringer was also accused of sexual misconduct in the past, charges which he denied.)

Adams who has generally avoided expressing his opinions about Cuomo in a direct manner in the past, said to POLITICO in an interview in the past that he’d like to remind voters that the former governor has signed a controversial law restricting the amount of cash bail that is allowed in criminal instances.
