GOP Candidate To Run For Seat Held By Rep. Don Davis In North Carolina Midterms

Sandy Roberson Launches Campaign for North Carolina’s First Congressional District
On April 23, Sandy Roberson, the current mayor of Rocky Mount, North Carolina, declared his intention to run for Congress, aiming to represent North Carolina’s First Congressional District. Roberson, a staunch Republican, has positioned himself as a firm supporter of former President Donald Trump, pledging to champion Trump’s agenda and address critical issues.
“I’m running for Congress because North Carolinians deserve a representative who isn’t afraid to take on the tough issues,” Roberson stated. He emphasized his commitment to securing the border, halting the influx of deadly fentanyl, and revitalizing the American economy to benefit the residents of the district.
Strategic Redistricting and Electoral Dynamics
The First Congressional District, traditionally a Democratic stronghold since 1883, has seen a shift that may favor Republicans following a strategic redistricting by the GOP-led North Carolina General Assembly in 2023. This change has made the district more competitive, evidenced by Trump’s narrow victory here in the 2024 elections, despite Democratic Rep. Don Davis securing reelection by a slim margin.
The North Carolina GOP has expressed confidence in their ability to contest and win the seat, citing Davis’s precarious position and inconsistent voting record as vulnerabilities. “Republicans feel very strongly that Davis is beatable. We can put a Republican in there that will stand with President Trump against Don Davis,” said Matt Mercer, NCGOP Communications Director.
Controversial Voting Record of Don Davis

Rep. Don Davis has faced criticism for his voting behavior, which includes abstaining on the Protect Women And Girls In Sports act and opposing a budget bill that was crucial for the district. His inconsistent stance on the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act has also drawn ire, particularly his shift from support to opposition when the bill reached the House floor.
“After promising to put North Carolinians first, Don Davis has voted to make life more expensive and less safe, flip-flopped and voted to let illegal immigrants vote, refused to ban biological males from competing in girls’ sports and even voted against critical hurricanes relief,” said Maureen O’Toole, spokeswoman for the National Republican Congressional Committee.
Endorsements and Previous Campaigns
Roberson has garnered support from key figures within the Republican Party, including Laurie Buckhout, the district’s 2024 GOP nominee, who narrowly lost to Davis. Buckhout praised Roberson’s dedication and conservative values, urging Republicans to unite behind him to reclaim the district from Democratic control.
Having previously contested the Republican primary in 2022, Roberson is no stranger to campaigning for this seat, although he was defeated by Sandy Smith, who subsequently lost to Davis in the general election.
As the political landscape continues to evolve, Roberson’s campaign is poised to challenge the long-standing Democratic dominance in North Carolina’s First Congressional District, signaling a potentially significant shift in the political alignment of the region.
