DeSantis sets pace for GOP governors on immigration

President Trump and Governor DeSantis Lead the Charge Against Illegal Immigration

In a robust effort to tackle illegal immigration, President Donald Trump has teamed up with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who is spearheading a pioneering state-level enforcement initiative. Governor DeSantis, a staunch Republican, has enacted rigorous laws that criminalize illegal entry into Florida and mandate state and local law enforcement agencies to collaborate closely with federal authorities to enforce immigration laws to their fullest extent.

Operation Tidal Wave: A New Benchmark in Immigration Enforcement

Last Thursday, Governor DeSantis joined forces with the Department of Homeland Security to unveil Operation Tidal Wave. This significant joint federal-state operation successfully apprehended 1,120 illegal immigrants with criminal records in just one week. DeSantis hailed this operation as a potential model for other states to follow, emphasizing its effectiveness in addressing illegal immigration.

Expanding Efforts and Setting a Precedent

The following day, Governor DeSantis outlined his future strategies, which include the establishment of temporary detention facilities and the appointment of state National Guard judge advocate general lawyers as immigration judges to expedite the processing of cases. Additionally, he plans to organize deportation flights to facilitate the swift return of migrants to their home countries. “I think this really represents a model,” DeSantis stated, expressing his hope that other states, encouraged by Republican voters, would adopt similar measures.

DeSantis criticized the mere banning of sanctuary jurisdictions and limited cooperation with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) as insufficient. He argued that effective immigration enforcement requires active partnerships with ICE and direct involvement in operations.

DeSantis praised President Trump for significantly securing the southern border, describing it as “pretty close to 100% secure.” However, he noted that federal efforts alone are not enough to address the presence of millions of illegal immigrants who settled in the U.S. during the Biden administration. By enhancing state-level enforcement, DeSantis believes that deportation numbers could dramatically increase.

One of the key initiatives involves urging state and local law enforcement agencies to enter into 287(g) agreements with ICE, allowing them to actively participate in immigration enforcement. Since President Trump’s return to office, the number of these agreements has surged from 135 to 517.

DeSantis also highlighted Florida’s readiness to assist in deportations and mentioned that the state has vendors prepared to provide up to 10,000 beds to support ICE in detaining migrants.

Other Republican Governors Taking Action

During the Biden years, Texas Governor Greg Abbott emerged as a leading opponent of lax immigration policies due to Texas’ extensive border and the influx of illegal immigrants. His initiative to bus migrants to sanctuary cities highlighted the burden on border states and prompted criticism of Biden’s immigration policies from cities like New York and Chicago.

Taking a cue from Abbott, Governor DeSantis implemented a similar strategy by redirecting migrants from Texas to Martha’s Vineyard, exposing the hypocrisy of liberal elites who support open borders but resist dealing with the consequences in their communities.

Addressing the Haitian Migrant Crisis

Amidst political instability in Haiti, Governor DeSantis took proactive measures by deploying the Florida National Guard to assist the overstretched Coast Guard in intercepting migrant boats, effectively reducing illegal maritime entries.

Economic Impact and Benefits of Stricter Immigration Policies

Despite predictions of economic downturns due to stricter immigration policies, Governor DeSantis reported positive outcomes such as reduced emergency room costs and increased wages due to the hiring of legal workers. He dismissed the dire forecasts as unfounded, citing the tangible benefits of enforcing immigration laws more rigorously.

As Governor DeSantis continues to champion aggressive immigration enforcement in Florida, his actions set a compelling example for other states to follow, potentially reshaping the national approach to managing illegal immigration.
