Gavin Newsom declares ‘democracy’ at stake in battle with Trump over Los Angeles

Governor Newsom Challenges President Trump
In a fervent address on Tuesday night, California Governor Gavin Newsom positioned himself as a leading Democratic antagonist to President Donald Trump. Newsom, vocally criticizing the administration, accused President Trump of endangering the democratic system by deploying military personnel in Los Angeles. “Democracy is under assault,” he asserted, calling for the removal of thousands of troops from the city’s streets.
Criticisms against Trump’s Policies
Newsom sharply criticized the impact of President Trump’s policies on immigration, highlighting the violence during anti-ICE demonstrations which he attributed to Trump’s harsh rhetoric and actions. He disparaged Trump’s deportation initiative targeting minor workers like “dishwashers, gardeners, day laborers, and seamstresses,” labeling it a display of “weakness masquerading as strength.”
Accusations of Inciting Violence
The California Governor escalated his rhetoric by implicating President Trump in the chaos of the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack, claiming Trump is inclined to endorse lawlessness if it benefits him. Newsom emphasized the threat to civil liberties under Trump’s leadership, stating, “If some of us can be snatched off the streets without a warrant, based only on suspicion or skin color, then none of us are safe.”
Unrest and Troop Deployment in Los Angeles
The address followed four days of turbulence in Los Angeles, initially sparked by a small-scale operation by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. This quickly expanded into a significant protest against ICE and Trump’s extensive immigration policies, prompting the President to order the deployment of National Guard troops. This move led to a cycle of further unrest and subsequent troop deployments. Trump touted his decision as a necessary action to prevent greater violence and even suggested that Governor Newsom should be arrested for his handling of the situation, accusing him of allowing “a lot of death, a lot of potential death.”
Legal Action and Opposition to Troop Deployment

In response, Governor Newsom has taken legal measures, filing a lawsuit to challenge the legality of Trump’s troop deployment, awaiting a judicial decision. He reported that over 370 people had been arrested during the protests, with ongoing efforts to identify and prosecute other participants. Newsom criticized the federal government’s approach as prioritizing “theatrics over public safety” and declared, “We honor their service. We honor their bravery. But we do not want our streets militarized by our own armed forces. Not in L.A. Not in California. Not anywhere.”
