Los Angeles Times editor resigns over owner’s refusal to endorse Harris
The Los Angeles Times’ top editor resigned on Wednesday after the owner refused to endorse Kamala for president.
The Times, California’s biggest newspaper, has declined to endorse anyone for president. This was the Times’ position from 1976 to 2004. However, it has supported Democrats in four subsequent presidential elections.
Mariel Garza, editorials editor of the Daily News, resigned in protest. She said that these were “dangerous” times.
“I’m resigning, because I don’t want us to be silent,” Ms. Garza said in an interview with the Columbia Journalism Review. In dangerous times, honest individuals need to speak up. “This is how I stand up.”
Ms. Garza stated that she had no illusions about the importance of the endorsement in the election. The Times readership is liberal, and California isn’t considered to be a competitive state.
In her letter of resignation, which was also published in the CJR newspaper, she described the decision as “maybe a little sexist and racism.”
“How can we spend eight long years vilifying Trump and the dangers his leadership poses for the country, and then not endorse the perfectly decent Democrat opponent — whom we had previously endorsed as a candidate for the US Senate?” asked Ms. Garza.
The non-endorsement undercuts the integrity and credibility of our editorial board, as well as every endorsement we give, even for school board elections. The public will wonder whether each endorsement was made by a team of journalists following extensive research and discussion or by a decree from the owner”, she added.
