Mazie Hirono wins Hawaii Senate primary, setting Dems up for much-needed November win

Mazie Hirono won her primary easily against Clyde Lewman & Ron Curtis, on Saturday.

Sen. Mazie Hiroo, D-Hawaii won her primary on Saturday with ease, putting Democrats in a position to win the general election.

She faced Clyde Lewman a wood product salesman and Ron Curtis a retired engineering.

Curtis, the Republican candidate for Hirono’s Senate seat, was up last in 2018. He lost the incumbent Democrat’s Senate seat by 29% to 71%.

In 2020, he also ran against Rep. Ed Case (D-Hawaii) for his House Seat, but lost with similar margins.

Hirono is a progressive who wants to represent the island majority left-wing state for a third term of six years.

The U.S. Senator from Japan is expected to win Hawaii’s next general election. Her victory will be welcomed by Democrats who are fighting to maintain their razor-thin Senate majority.

According to data on campaign finance, her 2024 campaign raised more than $3,000,000 in individual contributions. The Federal Election Commission website did not contain records of her opponent’s fundraising.

Hirono served as the lieutenant-governor of Hawaii for three terms before she was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives.
