Missouri Republican Launches Bid To Enshrine Abortion Exceptions In State Constitution

The Missouri Independent reported that a former GOP political activist filed six petitions Wednesday seeking to create exceptions for Missouri’s abortion laws.

According to The Missouri Independent, Jamie Corley, a former aide to three Republican congressmen, presented the petitions in order to amend the state constitution to allow for abortion exceptions in cases of rape, incest and fatal fetal anomalies, as well as the safety and health of the mother. The petitions were similar, but only three limited abortions to 12 weeks following conception.

It’s going be a novel strategy to change this status quo. Corley, in a press release to the Daily Caller News Foundation, said that they were building a coalition of Missourians, who believe the current abortion laws are extreme and dangerous, and need to be changed. “Missourians should have the chance to vote on a rational, independent plan that will restore limited but legal access to abortion in Missouri by 2024.”

According to The Missouri Independent, the current Missouri abortion laws, which came into effect in 2022 after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade’s ruling, only permit abortions during medical emergencies. The Missouri Independent reports that doctors who perform abortions can be charged with a class B crime, which could result in them being jailed for up to 15 years. They may also lose their medical license.

The current Missouri abortion law is draconian and punitive, making it unsafe for families. In a press statement announcing Corley’s petitions, Corley stated that the law is contrary to public opinion.

According to a press release, Corley needs to collect more than 170,000 signatures by May 2024 in order to get her constitutional amendment on the ballot. According to the Missouri government’s process, after a state official has verified the signatures, an amendment will be placed on the ballot and become law if at least 50% of voters approve it.
