Texas AG Paxton Teases Senate Run After Acquittal

Ken Paxton, Republican Texas Attorney General, said on Wednesday that he may challenge Republican incumbent Sen. John Cornyn for the 2026 election.

Paxton said to Tucker Carlson on Wednesday, “Now that I’ve gone through [the impeachment], everything is on the table.” I’ve seen that John Cornyn has represented Texas and not us. It’s about time someone ran against him who would do the job right, represent us, and be concerned with what is happening at the border.

Paxton stated that Cornyn has never faced any serious competition for his Senate seat, and receives support from Republicans, including Senate Minority leader Mitch McConnell.

Paxton, who said Cornyn had not been outspoken enough about the border crisis on the southern side, for which he has filed over 45 lawsuits, did criticize Biden during the interview.

Cornyn, in an interview, said: “It is chaos. I wonder what it will take to get the Biden administration’s attention.” Cornyn was referring to reports that 4,000 illegal immigrants had overpowered Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents near Eagle Pass. “The President is afraid of his progressive base who believe in open borders. So that’s what he’s doing.”

Cornyn praised the recent actions of Gov. Greg Abbott deployed Texas National Guard troops as well as other law enforcement in the area.

Cornyn stated, “I am proud of the efforts of Governor Abbott, Texas legislators — the leadership in Texas — the National Guard and Department of Public Safety.” “Frankly if they didn’t do it, there would be nothing between the cartels, and our country. It would be much worse.” Cornyn said.

Paxton said, however, that he believed Cornyn had been in the Senate “too long”, and that his opinions no longer aligned with most Texans.

Paxton stated that Cornyn had been apathetic on this matter. “To me, it seems he has been in Washington for too long.” He’s been in Washington for about 14 years, and I cannot think of anything he has done for our state or country. Let alone the invasion.

Paxton, who has been attorney general since 2015, won a third four-year mandate in November 2022.
