As President Trump reaches the 100-day milestone of his administration, he has definitively answered the pressing question on immigration: it is indeed possible to secure the border through determination and strong leadership. Illegal crossings have plummeted to the lowest levels ever recorded, demonstrating the effectiveness of his policies.
Drastic Reduction in Illegal Crossings
Under President Trump’s watch, the number of illegal immigrants attempting to cross the border has significantly decreased. Border migrant shelters are closing due to a 99.99% drop in the number of people caught and released. Even the smuggling cartels are feeling the pinch, struggling to find customers.
Comparison with Previous Administration
During the Biden administration, up to 10,000 illegal immigrants were encountered daily at the southern border. In stark contrast, this number was reduced to just 178 on a recent Sunday. Similarly, the number of individuals who evaded detection, known as ‘gotaways,’ has decreased from 1,800 per day under Biden to a mere 38, according to White House border czar Tom Homan.
“Today, as I’m standing here, we [have] the most secure border in the history of this nation, and the numbers prove it,” Mr. Homan stated, highlighting the administration’s significant achievement in border security.

This remarkable turnaround was achieved without the need for new legislation or significant financial input from Congress, which is still deliberating over President Trump’s request for additional funding. Instead, the administration utilized a mix of longstanding laws, military support, and strategic use of political capital.
“It took Donald Trump one hour on the very first day of his administration to close the border down,” noted Todd Bensman of the Center for Immigration Studies. He emphasized that the comprehensive immigration reform touted by others was unnecessary, labeling it as mere propaganda.
Challenges from Immigrant Rights Groups
The success of President Trump’s policies has left immigrant rights groups scrambling. These groups have largely conceded defeat on the border issue and are now focusing their efforts further inside the U.S., attempting to mitigate the impact of Trump’s strict deportation policies.
Murad Awawdeh, president of the New York Immigration Coalition, criticized the administration’s approach, accusing it of racism and intent to harm communities of color. “What we are seeing is, this is not in fact about safety and security. It’s about creating chaos, panic and fear,” he claimed.
Legal Challenges and Future Directions
Despite facing several legal challenges, including pushback on efforts to revoke foreign students’ status and punish sanctuary jurisdictions, the Trump administration remains committed to enforcing immigration laws. White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller expressed determination to overcome judicial obstacles and increase deportations, especially of migrants with criminal records. “The bottom line is that the president is going to continue and expand and accelerate the effort to remove from our midst people who have no lawful right to be here, and we will do so without apology,” he affirmed.
