Buzz builds around Ocasio-Cortez’s future

Ocasio-Cortez and Sanders Lead “Fighting Oligarchy” Tour
Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) and Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) have been captivating audiences nationwide with their “Fighting Oligarchy” tour, sparking discussions about Ocasio-Cortez’s potential political trajectory. Their campaign has recently drawn impressive crowds, including tens of thousands in cities like Salt Lake City and Los Angeles, highlighting a growing discontent with the current Democratic leadership.
Generational Shift in Democratic Leadership
Basil Smikle, the former executive director of the New York State Democratic Party, remarked, “She represents the next generation of Democratic politics.” He noted Ocasio-Cortez’s push for a generational change in the party’s leadership, a theme evident since her initial congressional race against Joe Crowley. The tour, which has visited various cities primarily in the Western U.S., is aimed at sparking conversations about challenging the power of oligarchs and corporate interests in America.
Massive Rally Turnouts
The events have seen massive turnouts, with Sanders’s team reporting that about 20,000 people attended the rally inside the venue in Salt Lake City, and many more in Los Angeles. Ocasio-Cortez, energizing the crowd in Utah, expressed, “We can make a new world, a better country where we can fight for the dignity of all people.”
Speculations on Ocasio-Cortez’s Future
The increasing attention on the rallies comes as Democrats seek new strategies to counteract President Trump during his second term. During one rally, as Sanders introduced Ocasio-Cortez, a crowd member shouted “Future president!” which was met with cheers. This incident has fueled further speculation about her future role within the party.

Despite some party members’ reservations about her confrontational style, Ocasio-Cortez has been a significant figure within the Democratic Party. She has been known for her bold stances, such as opposing the Pelosi-backed emergency border funding bill and criticizing party leadership on various issues, including the handling of the war in Gaza and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer’s flip-flop on the government funding bill.
Divided Opinions Within the Democratic Party
While the rallies have generated enthusiasm among certain segments of the Democratic base, not all party strategists agree with this approach. Matt Bennett from the center-left Third Way voiced concerns that the rally attendees represent only the base voters and not the broader electorate necessary for future victories. He emphasized the importance of reconnecting with voters who have drifted away from the Democratic Party.
Despite differing opinions on her methods, many see her potential to influence the party positively. Bennett expressed hope that Ocasio-Cortez would remain in the House of Representatives, where she could effectively challenge Trump’s policies should Democrats regain the majority.
As Democrats continue to navigate their uncertain future, Ocasio-Cortez’s role could significantly shape the party’s direction. Angelo Greco, a progressive operative, described her as a “moral compass” for the party, highlighting her unique cultural appeal and authenticity derived from her lived experiences.
