According to the party’s Senate leader, there is one last hope for the party against Trump’s legislative assault.

Chuck Schumer, Senate Majority leader, has revealed what the Democratic Party is using as a secret weapon to fight back against Donald Trump’s MAGA offensive.

After a disastrous presidential election, in which the Democrats lost control of both chambers of Congress and the White House, they are still holding on to one last hope.

Since the beginning of the Obama administration, Senator Schumer and President Biden have quietly stacked the federal judiciary, bringing in liberal-minded judges, knowing that they would one day be a vital bulwark to a Trump resurgence.

Before Christmas, they succeeded in their goal to push through a record number of 235 judicial nominees. This is the most confirmations under a single administration since Jimmy Carter’s White House. This includes 150 female judges, which is the highest number under any president.

Biden and Schumer believe that the new batch of judges is their best and maybe their only chance to preserve any legacy of the past four years.

“I don’t know what (Trump) will do.” Schumer said in an exclusive interview with Politico Playbook that the judiciary would be “one of, if not our most powerful barrier” against Trump’s actions.

He said that the Trump administration would go after anything. They have so many different MAGA members: those who are against women’s rights, the environment, the rights of workers and unions; those who are against the consumer. They will use the judiciary to their advantage in any way possible.

Schumer boasted that the Democrats did not choose lawyers and prosecutors from “fancy firms” but instead chose people who “represent America”, including civil rights lawyers, voting right experts, teachers, union representatives, scholars, and mentors.

Schumer stated that they wanted to confirm “as many MAGA judges as possible” because they knew Trump had stacked the bench with MAGA judges. Achieving balance was also important. The more, the better.

He told Politico that: “Having judges who aren’t MAGA judges or extreme judges is more important now than ever before.”

Schumer, who saw the writing in the wall over the past couple of years, said: “We saw also that the hard-right was gearing themselves up to use the court in case after case in order to achieve their objectives.”

The White House’s recriminations will fuel a fight to control the Republican Congress. Schumer hopes his army of judges will hold the fort till (he hopes) cavalry arrives at the mid-terms in two years.

Mitch McConnell’s Republican counterpart, Schumer, used the Senate’s powers to shape the judiciary aggressively. McConnell had established a record of confirmations during Trump’s first tenure. McConnell created a conservative majority on the Supreme Court through a series power moves. McConnell blocked President Barack Obama’s nomination of Merrick Garrland, who was then a federal appellate court judge, to replace conservative justice Antonin Scalia, who died in March 2016. Then, when a similar vacancy arose in 2020 due to the death of liberal Ruth Bader Ginsburg, he rushed to nominate the conservative Amy Coney Barrett to the bench.
