DHS released at least 99 terrorism suspects into U.S. under Biden, House report concludes

A report released by Congress on Monday revealed that the Biden administration had caught and released 99 illegal immigrants who matched up with the terrorist watch list.

The House Judiciary Committee reported that they were captured by Border Patrol agents along the southern border between 2021 and 2023, but were then released in accordance with the Biden administration’s relaxed immigration policy.

As of June, another 34 illegal immigrants flagged on the watch list were still being detained.

Border Patrol agents have been detecting 375 people at the southern border since the beginning of fiscal year 2021. This includes 282 in 2021-2023. This means that more than a third of the terrorism watchlist migrant are released.

The 36 countries that were affected included the hotspots of terror in Afghanistan, Iraq and Pakistan as well as Somalia, Syria, Tajikistan, Yemen, and Syria.

The House report stated that at least 27 of these terrorism suspects had been granted bail by an immigration judge and four others were granted asylum. The report said that most immigration judges do not have access to classified information. This means they may not be aware of the dangers posed by those who appear before them.

The report prepared by the Republican Staff of the House Judiciary Committee, and released by Ohio Republican Chairman Jim Jordan stated that “Releasing terrorists to the United States is almost routine for Biden-Harris Administration.”

Biden’s administration has kept a tight lid on the number of terrorist suspects that it has detected, but has not revealed what they did with them.

Republicans on Capitol Hill are pressing for the release of data. The report states that the data was obtained from Homeland Security Department in the month of June.

The Washington Times has contacted the Department for comment.

Alejandro Mayorkas, Homeland Security Secretary, acknowledged in testimony before Congress that some people are released while others are detained.

In an appearance in April before the House Homeland Security Committee, he stated that “if an individual is listed on the terrorist screening database, and they present a threat to public safety or national security, then they are given priority for detention.”

In recent months the number of border terrorist arrests has decreased significantly, suggesting a change in patterns of new arrivals.

In June, Border Patrol arrested 3 people whose names were on the watchlist. This was the lowest monthly number since Homeland Security started reporting numbers in 2022.

Watchlist arrests do not tell the full story.

According to the new report, “hundreds of potential terrorists have entered the U.S. yet weren’t listed on the watchlist when they were initially encountered.”

Late last month, FBI Director Christopher A. Wray addressed Congress.

He cited the case of 8 Tajik migrants. After a late conclusion that they were terrorists, authorities had to arrest the migrants on immigration charges.

According to the new report, three Tajiks entered the U.S. through a special “parole program” created by the Biden Administration. This program offers leniency to undocumented migrants who schedule their arrival at border crossings in advance using an app on their smartphone.

Agents of Border Patrol arrested and then released four more Tajik migrants. The last Tajik was admitted via a border crossing, despite having not used the smartphone application.

According to the new committee report, cases such as these undermined Mr. Mayorkas’ assurances.

The staff report stated that “as DHS has released into the U.S. potential terrorists, Secretary Mayorkas is wrong. DHS’s vetting illegal aliens at border is not sufficient to uncover derogatory data on potentially dangerous aliens.”

In his testimony, Mr. Wray said that the immigration system is increasing the risk of a terrorist entering the U.S.

He expressed concern about attacks on “soft targets” like the Islamic State terrorists’ attack in Russia last spring, when they killed over 140 people in a concert hall.

“I’m increasingly worried that foreign terrorists may seek to exploit vulnerabilities along our southwest border, or at other points of entry, or in other aspects of our immigration systems to facilitate an assault here in the United States,” Wray said to the House Judiciary Committee.
