Pelosi doubles down on support for Harris candidacy after rift with Biden: ‘Country is very happy’
Nancy Pelosi, former House Speaker (D-CA), deflected the criticism of Democrats who were upset about her role in ending Joe Biden’s bid for reelection.
Pelosi, who met with California’s delegates in advance of Biden’s address to his party at the Democratic National Convention’s first night, defended the actions she took leading up to President Obama’s historic exit.
Pelosi said, “If they are upset, I am sorry for them. But the country is very pleased,” according to The Sacramento Bee. She was asked about Democratic colleagues who were upset because she had been rumored as being behind the effort to remove Biden.
She said, “I only wanted to win this race.” Pelosi supported Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic Party’s nominee for president the day after Biden stepped down.
Pelosi said to the press earlier this month that she had shed many tears and lost much sleep about the state of her relationship since Biden dropped his bid for reelection. Pelosi told a small group of reporters that she hadn’t spoken to Biden in 40 years, since he announced he wouldn’t be running for re-election.
Pelosi was asked days before these comments if her relationship with Biden was “fine.” She replied “You would have to ask him.”
She added, “I certainly hope so.”
Washington, D.C., rife in rumors, after Biden’s debate with Obama left Democrats blazing, fearing that his campaign would be doomed, Pelosi had been coordinating behind-the-scenes to kick out the presumed nominee.
After the historic exit of the President, the former House Speaker deflected media questions about her role convincing Biden to resign and refused to deny that she directly expressed concerns to her friend that he might lose on Election Day to former president Donald Trump.
