Trump Confirms 25% Tariffs on Canada, Mexico Will Take Effect Tuesday

On Monday, President Donald Trump confirmed that tariffs of 25 percent on Canada and Mexico would take effect Tuesday.
Trump said that tariffs against America’s neighbours would go into effect on Tuesday, while taking questions from reporters at a news conference announcing a 100 billion dollar investment by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.
He said, “But most importantly, tomorrow we will be imposing tariffs of 25 percent on Canada, and 25 percent Mexico.”
Trump urged car makers in Canada and Mexico to move to the United States, to avoid tariffs.

We have a market, so I’d say to those in Canada and Mexico that they would be better off building car plants here. The market is where the auto companies sell the most. I believe it will be very exciting and very exciting for them.
Trump had originally planned to impose tariffs of 25 percent on Canada and Mexico as early as February 4. Trump imposed a ten-percent tariff on Canadian energy products, a notable exception. He also imposed an additional 10 percent tariff on China.
Just hours before tariffs were to be implemented, Mexico and Canada agreed that they would increase security at their borders with the United States. The three countries then agreed on a four week pause in the tariffs.
Tariffs against China have, however, been implemented.
When a reporter asked Trump if Canada and Mexico could reach a deal by midnight, Trump replied that there was “no space”.
No room for Canada or Mexico. Tariffs are already set. “They go into effect tomorrow”, he said.
He then referred to the fentanyl epidemic, which was what prompted these tariffs, and talked about the additional ten per cent tariff he will impose on China to bring it up to twenty per cent.
He told reporters: “Just to make sure you understand, huge amounts of fentanyl has poured into our nation from Mexico and, as you may know, from China. It goes to Mexico and to Canada.” “And China had another ten.” It’s 10 plus 10.
